Minor improvements in FTP/SFTP

Today, I'm going to write a very short blog post about 2 minor improvements in FTP/SFTP support in NetBeans.

The first improvement is providing detailed information about the file transfer progress (uploading as well as downloading) and we hope that many our users will find it useful. The information is based on file size so it should be quite accurate.

File Transfer Progress

The other improvement is more UI enhancement but again, we hope that it will be useful as well.

As I promised, this blog post was very short but please, do not forget to test it and report all the issues or enhancements you find in NetBeans IssueZilla (component php, subcomponent ftp support).

Comments:

why does netbeans change owner on remote server?

i had files with 760 (my user was in a group), but netbeans changed owner :(

To Markus F & artis:
Could you please submit an enhancement?

Thanks,
Tomas

To artis:
Are you sure that NetBeans is a culprit? NetBeans does not change owner at all (it can set permissions if checked in properties) - could you please recheck it?

Thanks,
Tomas

Regarding the "Upload open files", I added a shortcut key to the upload action.
When I want to upload the file I'm working on I just hit ctrl+alt+u.
It doesn't upload all the open files at once but it makes my work a lot faster.

Would be great to be able to "view remote" and "compare with remote" where "remote" is your remote FTP directory. Unless you are deploying direct from SVN it is often useful to be able to browse your remote FTP directory and sometimes to compare a local file to its remote equivalent as opposed to just comparing to SVN

another reason remote FTP browsing is useful is for downloading of individual remote files to local when they dont exist elsewhere, e.g. cache files

It was a very nice idea! Just wanna say thank you for the information you have shared. Just continue writing this kind of post. I will be your loyal reader. Thanks again.

Netbeans is an excellent tool. However the way upload/download is implemented is fairly lame, especially if you have 1000's of files:

1. anytime you initiate a download, it crawls the entire directory structure, then provides a flattened list of files. Not too useful if you just want to download one file that is missing on the client.

2. If you restart a download, it re-crawls the entire directory tree, apparently it cant cache the results from the last file list it built.

3 Need a heiracical tree display of what to download, not a flattened list of 1000's files.

4. I want to download everything except images directory from the root, so have to uncheck 3000 images in the list, unless I'm missing something?

5. I realistic design would be similar to any FTP program where your working with a tree, and the structure is cached, allowing you to refresh if need be.

Kellyk:

4. Use search input field to filter files you want to uncheck, then right click in the list and select Uncheck All.

I'd also use background scanning for modified files on the server. It'd be enough to check when opening a file.

agree 110% with Kellyk.

I too work with thousands of files and these things are down right infuriating!. Need treeview. instead of flattened view and allow checking/unchecking large amounts of files via tree structure.

I have had to wait literally HOURS just for it to crawl through to get the directory structure over FTP. As most of my projects have over 10,000 files.
And its really annoying that when u run a project that it wants to reupload EVERY single file (over 10k files) rather than just the 1 file that has changed & there's no easy way to uncheck/check all the files.

Please, please i implore you these need to be fixed..
