Caiman - the new installer

My blog thus far has mostly been about Solaris Volume Manager. Over the past few months, I have moved on to looking at another problem. Solaris install. Working on install is challanging, to say the least. One feels like a walking target at a shooting range.
Sun did not invest heavily on interactive install. This was not really important when we were selling honking servers. Things like Flash install were more important. Now the landscape has changed considerably. With opensolaris, a number of people are running Solaris on their laptops, especially developers. The first point of contact for such people is the installer. To capture the mindshare of developers we need to focus on laptops and interactive install therefore becomes critical.
Caiman is the code name for this project. This was launched a few months ago. It is not yet an official opensolaris project. However a proposal to that effect has been filed. An excellent survey of the install issues is available here and an architectural document is available here along with some proposed screen shots for the new installer. All the work on this will be done in the open and we will actively look for community involvement.
