xVM Ops Center in a Virtual world...
By mrbill on Jul 03, 2008
Yet another little homespun project that will make people ask "Why?!". I need to get up to speed on xVM Ops Center to stay ahead of my customers. It also seems like a really cool tool for managing the dozen or so machines around my house. Yes, I have three kids, 9, 4, and 2, and one computer literate wife. Yet there are about a dozen machines up and running at any given time, plus a pile of virtual machines serving a variety of purposes. There are SunRays around the place, great gadgets for ordering car parts from the garage if you don't want to keep running inside and washing your hands to use a computer. Those spill-proof keyboards like the ones they use at Jiffy Lube rock for greasy fingers searching for 30 year old wiper switches on eBay.
Here is a little screenshot from within a xVM VirtualBox Solaris 10 VM on my desktop... Let your mind wander to the possibilities.
I'll bet you thought of xVM Ops Center as a potentially fabulous tool for managing all of your servers and possibly even virtual machines within those servers. But why not run the Ops Center itself from within a virtual machine? Hmmm... Think on that one for a while, and I'll be back with more details.
