Joys of an RD...

Yet another early morning, fire up the twin and ready to move off. But for no particular reason, feel like checking the battery charge. So switch it off, walk back upstairs and back down with the multimeter. Flip the seat up, and check the voltage. But it's fine, a steady 12.5 volts. Ah well, ok. So about to close the seat back, but suddenly eyes stray to the Digital CDI tucked in between the battery and the airbox. Nothing special, except that there is a blue wire sticking out and connected nowhere.

Thinking back to the digital CDI wiring diagram, i remember that the blue wire is meant for switching to static timing. A sudden urge to tweak, and i decide to have a try. I grab a green wire - there were a couple of them unused - and connect to the blue one, thus shorting it, and switching off the timing curve. I start up the bike, and there is a noticeable difference in idle - it's not smooth as earlier. No surprise, because below off 3k rpm or so, the timing curve would retard the timing and bring it much closer to TDC. Now with the timing curve off, the timing is pegged at whatever the position of the stator plate is. Anyway decide to checkout further.

On the road, it's a dream - higher off 5k, the bike pulls like a demon. The high rpm torque has gone up so bloody much. So i was sitting on retarded timing all this time, at higher rpms. Only downside is that, lower rpms are not that friendly, and its rather erratic. So obviously the solution is to move the stator plate clockwise more - advancing the timing - and then unearth the blue wire and switch back to variable timing.

Only issue is, i have used up the clockwise movement allowed by the stator plate slots - so i would need to open up the magneto, remove the plate, and then take it to a machine shop and get the slots lengthened. So looking forward to the next weekend, and a few more bhp. The joys of owning an RD...
