How Shell Retail fuels planning and modelling success

As the world’s number one mobility retailer, the scale of Shell Retail’s business is vast: serving 30 million customers a day, processing 11 billion transactions a year across 44,000 stations in more than 75 countries.

The complexities of this global operating model—spanning retailers, dealers and wholesalers—alongside changing market conditions means modelling and planning processes are crucial.

Shell Retail selected Oracle Cloud EPM Planning to standardise and unify a legacy system of manual Excel models. This would also allow benchmarking and analysis for Shell retailers.

Working alongside implementation partner Finext, it was clear for Shell to see the flexibility and robustness of Oracle Cloud Planning, a global integrated planning solution with 24/7 replan functionalities for different time zones, cultures and legal output.

So far, the results have been positive. Shell Retail has implemented EPM Planning in 17 regions, with a reduction in the business replan cycle time. This helps retailers to correct costs, identify possibilities for reductions and stay on plan.

When asked about advice for organisations embarking on similar journeys, Williams says, “Think about where you want to go with the project over time. The project on its own is good but integrating it with all the other systems is key for growth. And finally, having tools and processes is important, but it’s all about the right team of people to support you in that.”
