What makes you unique? What makes your business unique? The most successful businesses and organizations are the ones that provide a unique product or service that nobody else provides. And the right cloud-based technology is what enables businesses and organizations to do that. But by going to cloud technology, does this mean that customers must compromise and implement the same processes implemented by all the other cloud customers? For Oracle Cloud Applications customers, the answer to that question is “NO”!

To address flexible and unique business requirements, Oracle provides the most comprehensive suite of cloud applications in the industry. Oracle Cloud Applications include comprehensive, embedded tools that allow customers to configure the applications according to their uniqueness. Additionally, Oracle provides powerful cloud infrastructure and platform services that can further extend and compliment applications functionality while also allowing customers to continuously uptake ever evolving application innovations. Customers can do this without concerns of not being able to upgrade their cloud services. As a result, Oracle can provide a combination of application, platform, and infrastructure cloud services that no other vendor can match.

In this post, we will explore the powerful ways that customers can configure Oracle Cloud Applications. We will also explore the add-on Oracle Infrastructure and Platform Services, including the new Oracle Applications Platform that customers can enable alongside their Oracle Applications to extend functionality and drive industry leadership for their business.

Embedded application tailoring and configuration

But in Oracle Cloud Applications, can I add new fields? Can I remove fields? Can I create a new page? Can I change approval workflows? Can I change the application appearance and branding? These are questions asked by our customers who want to be able to configure their Oracle Cloud Applications for their business. And the answer to all these questions is a resounding “YES”!

Oracle Cloud Application configuration capabilities are quite extensive and too long to list in a single post. The following are just a few highlights of the application configuration capabilities that can be done out of the box:

  • Configuring workflow and approval processes.
  • Tailoring the user interface at the field, menu, and page level.
  • Extending business objects through creation of user-defined fields.
  • Creating new reports, KPIs, and dashboards by team, individual, or organization.

Customers can build and configure dashboards so that each user sees a view of the business the way that they want to see it. Customers can define approval workflows to address unique business scenarios. User defined fields can track specialized company or industry fields, and these fields can be added to reports and pages as necessary. But again, this is just a sample of pre-built and embedded Oracle Application configuration functionality.  Much more exists that we invite customers to explore in more detail.

Extending application functionality using Oracle Infrastructure Services

But what if I need to extend prebuilt application functionality? Can I do that with my Oracle Cloud Applications? Here again, the answer is an equally resounding “YES”!  No matter how comprehensive Oracle Cloud Applications are, customers still sometimes have specific business or industry requirements that justify the creation of an application extension.

In addition to the built-in Oracle Cloud Application configuration functionality described in the previous section, customers can also extend application functionality using add-on Oracle Infrastructure and Platform services. There are many benefits to using multiple Oracle services together, and these were outlined in our first post of this series, Oracle Cloud Applications: Why Technology Matters.

As Oracle continuously enhances our cloud services, we have now made available to Fusion customers the Oracle Applications Platform, which Oracle uses to develop Oracle Cloud Applications. The Oracle Applications Platform includes Oracle Visual Builder Studio and the Oracle Redwood Design System. Visual Builder Studio is a low-code development tool, and Oracle Redwood is a set of building blocks, components, and design templates all leveraged by Visual Builder Studio for customers to create their own Oracle Cloud Application Extensions.

Using the Oracle Applications Platform, customers can

  • Modify delivered Oracle Applications Redwood pages.
  • Create new Oracle Application pages.
  • Create new external applications that can then be embedded within Oracle Cloud Applications.
  • Leverage the same security, roles, privileges, and rich functionality being leveraged by Oracle Cloud Applications.
  • Create extensions using low-code development tools suitable for business users.
  • Create mobile application extensions to work with the applications and add smartphone functionality.
  • Leverage Oracle Redwood design components, composites, templates, and patterns.

The Redwood elements mentioned in this list are built and tested for operability and accessibility with Oracle Cloud Applications. Plus, Visual Builder and Redwood are enabled for Oracle Fusion customers now, so customers can start using them within their Oracle Cloud Applications today!

Oracle Cloud Applications extensions can also be built using other Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Services. Additional common extensions that customers can create for their Oracle Cloud Applications using Oracle Infrastructure and Platform services include the following:

  • Create integrations using Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC) for moving data in and out of their Oracle Applications environment.
  • Use an external Oracle Cloud Database to stage, transform, and pre-process data for inbound or outbound integrations.
  • Leverage Oracle Fusion Data Intelligence Platform for enterprise reporting, data mashups, and data warehousing with data in addition to Oracle Cloud Applications data.
  • Leverage Oracle Process Cloud to trigger operations in external applications or databases when Oracle SaaS business events occur.
  • Enable Oracle Digital Assistant (ODA) to enable chat and voice operability with the applications.
  • Use Oracle Cloud Process Automation to automate approval workflows and simplify repetitive tasks.
  • Plus, much, much more! Nearly all Oracle Infrastructure and platform services can be made to integrate and extend Oracle Cloud Applications depending on the use case and specific customer requirements.

Because of the rich enterprise technology and custom development services available through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Services, including the Oracle Applications Platform, it is nearly impossible to find a business or technical requirement that cannot be met when customers leverage Oracle as a technology partner.
