Learning to See Data in New Ways

If you're a regular visitor to this blog, you'll notice some changes: new color scheme, new font, even a change in the Oracle logo. It's all part of a new design system launched this week at Oracle OpenWorld called "Redwood."

Why would finance professionals care about a company rebranding exercise? Because in this case, it goes beyond marketing. It's intended to extend to the user experience in the finance applications that your teams use every day.

The redesign starts with a new mission statement written by company founder Larry Ellison: "Our mission is to help people see data in new ways, discover insights, unlock endless possibilities." The new design system, as explained by Hillel Cooperman, is intended to scale across events (like Oracle OpenWorld), customer marketing, Oracle.com, and even the user experience with Oracle software. 

"For eighteen months," Cooperman wrote recently, "the amazing multi-disciplinary folks at Oracle Design as well as all our partners in product development, marketing, sales, senior leadership, and more have been working to create a brand new state-of-the-art design system that works for periodic users, and power users. That works for end users and developers. That works for content-heavy experiences and works for interaction-focused experiences. That works for digital experiences, and physical ones like our annual Oracle OpenWorld conference. Anyone who works in design knows how often there can be arguments about how one design system couldn’t possibly scale to all those needs. But those arguments didn’t happen at Oracle. Instead, with some pretty great support from senior leadership, all these groups came together to create a system that’s flexible, that’s expressive, that scales, that tells our unique story, and that’s constantly evolving based on design research, learning, and listening."

The new look has received a positive response from Oracle OpenWorld attendees, and even from the media
