IDC has just released a new FutureScape report covering the manufacturing industry: “IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Manufacturing Product and Service Innovation 2020 Predictions.”  It discusses some of the key trends in manufacturing over the next five years and how disruptive technology like blockchain and AI will impact the manufacturing landscape.

According to Aly Pinder, Program Director at IDC, “The future will be bright for manufacturers if they are able to integrate data and efficiencies from product design all the way to service resolution and back. However, a true closed loop from product to service depends on leveraging innovative tools and technologies to break down silos of information and knowledge.”

Some IDC predictions for manufacturing include:

  • By 2021, 30% of Manufacturers will Adopt AI Chatbots for Customer Service.
  • By 2022, 25% of Manufacturers will Transform Their Service Execution by Deploying AI for Self-Healing Assets and Automated Decision Making.
  • By 2024, 90% of OEMs will Utilize AI to Ensure that Field Workers Approach Achieving 100% First-Time Fix Rates.
  • By 2025, 50% of G2000 Manufacturers will Incorporate Blockchain and 3D Printing in their Management of Service Parts.
