Groups on Mix: What's missing?

One of the things we'll focus on over the next few weeks is to provide a few first improvements to the group functionality on Mix.

There are currently more than 900 groups on Mix, though a large portion of them only have a handful of members and little to no activity as far as we can tell (an activity meter for groups will be in the works shortly as part ouf our metrics dashboard). There are also a good number of pretty big and active groups around all kinds of Oracle-related topics.

In addition to the feedback we've received last year, we wanted to know from some of the administrators of these bigger and more active groups what they think is missing from Mix that would help them better achieve their goals.

We have identified a few dozen leaders among our admins who either

  • manage a group of 100 or more members,

  • manage three or more groups or

  • have recently started a group that's grown quickly in size.

Today, we're asking them to let us know what features they want to see us implement over the next few months. Even though we think we have a pretty good idea of what's needed to make groups more useful for everybody, it's always good to get some validation.

We'll share their feedback next week. We also plan to reach out to other Mix members (e.g. newly registered users, very active users, users who haven't logged in in a while etc.) to hear their views.

If you're a group administrator on Mix who is not included in our sample, feel free to take part in the comments below. We'd like to know:

  • What is your group (or your groups) about and what are you trying to achieve?

  • How could Mix support you better?

  • What are the three things we should focus on over the next three months?

We look forward to hearing from you.

There's one feature that I'd like to go missing: Whenever someone sends me a message via Mix, or if I get a request to join one of the Mix groups I manage, I get duplicate email messages. Annoying, you know?

Here's another idea: As the manager of an invitation-only group, I should be able to remove people from a group. If there is some way to do that, I haven't seen it.

Hi Tim, The main group I run is the Agile PLM Strategy Council - used to communicate to select Agile PLM customers the meeting schedule/details, the topics to be covered, conversations and as a general archive of presentations from the council meetings. What I love about mix is the single spot for everyone to come and see what is going on, and the opportunity for mix members to collaborate and network. What I would like to see improved: 1. Support for attachments/files. I would love to post the ppt presentations here as I get numerous requests from customers for these -sometimes for ones several months old. 2. Easier log in rules- Several members cannot get in to the Mix because they do not have technet or their Oracle support login information. 3. Rich text editing/images/review period for posts -essentially stuff you can do on Which make me wonder if it is possible to combine these two tools into one. 4. Tools for managing users in my groups; with export to Excel feature to handle request for "the list of users" 5. General improvements: I get two emails when people request to join a group, seems like I have to use an old SSO password to get into the Mix. Thanks

Thanks! We're getting a lot of responses. Will share results early next week.

These days I don't use Mix as much as I use Connect, however some things that I have observed 1. email subscriptions. Give people the option of receiving an email update when there is activity in a group, that they are a member of. 2. Support File uploads 3. RSS feeds for comments/answers as well as original posts. 4. Wiki functionality, for content collaboration 5. Membership management tools - more metadata about who is a member of your group.

I do have a number of groups and really want the alerting that there is activity mentioned in an earlier comment. How do you close a group? I have a couple around my infamous 'evelator a OOW' incident, and they dont need to stay active.

@Debra Improved activity log and notifications are on our to-do list for February. We'll report on our progress here on the blog. We haven't defined a process yet for closing down groups. If you let me know which of your groups you have in mind, we'll look into it.
