为中国加油

Grant wrote the following letter to the Chinese army encouraging them to do their best in rescuing the earthquake victims in Sichuan. Technically he didn't write it, he dictated it to his sister. He is a master delegator, this one.

letter

Even though the quake was over a month ago it's still very much in the forefront of the news and in people's minds. Including kids.

I'm totally impressed that one (or both) of them knew the idiom 众志成城 (zhòng zhì chéng chéng, "unity of will is an impregnable stronghold") and how to use it. I think the small typo with the sound alike "重" (zhòng) makes it even more impressive. It would indicate to me that she's really internalized this particular idiom, rather than just having copied it from somewhere. Very nice.

Eric, I'm totally impressed that you recognized the typo in the note! One day I want to speak and read as well as you do. Seriously, I look at you and say 'if Eric can do that then I can too.' Yes, I'll be 100 when I reach your level but one day I will get there.

Yes, the kids have internalized a lot after this disaster. China has shown so much unity and sense of purpose in the wake of the earthquake and I'm glad my kids got to witness it.

Shubho, it's hard to say about Grant. One day he will either be in the corner office or behind bars. :)
