How are the Kids?

Last weekend Audrey (age 5-1/2) was playing with one of her friends who is also fluent in English and Mandarin. I asked how they decide what language they're going to speak together and she explained to me very slowly as if I was an idiot, "Well, we open our mouths and we talk, and whatever language comes out, that's the language we speak."
She lost her 3rd baby tooth last week.
Two weeks ago Grant (age 3) was going down a slide head first and landed wrong. Actually I don't know if there is a \*right\* way to land when you're going down a slide backwards but anyway, he cut his right eye just below the eyebrow and needed 3 stitches. My husband Buddy asked the ER doctor if he was going to have a scar. As he asked he pointed to his own scar in the exact same location - both the doctor and I had to laugh. Buddy tells me that in "his day" in Beijing they didn't give anesthesia for stitches. I asked how he managed to sit still through the stitching process and he said he knew it was his fault that he needed stitches so he knew he had to be quiet while the doctor patched him up.
Grant's English teacher at preschool sends home a personal note every week, talking about what the kids have been doing in class. "Grant seems to have a chimney fixation," she noted this week. It's true, the kid points out every chimney we pass... No clue where this comes from.
Buddy and I are doing well. Both his business and mine are aiming for profitability this year. We'll see which one gets there first.
