Drinking Alcohol: How much is healthy?

wine The other day I picked up a brochure at the doctor's office called "Drinking Alcohol: How much is healthy?".

Apparently authored by W.C. Fields, it says: "Men should drink no more than four standard drinks each day, women should have no more than two standard drinks a day, and everyone should have at least two alcohol free days a week."

Wait a sec, guys can have 20 drinks from Monday to Friday and still be in the "healthy" range...? Doesn't that seem like an awful lot?

So how do you recognize if you have a drinking problem? The brochure says to ask yourself these questions:
"- Do you sometimes argue with family or friends because of drinking?
- Do you ever get so drunk that you can't remember what you did?
- Do you ever drink to get rid of a hangover?

If you answered yes to one or more questions, think about reducing the amount you drink."

Yes, if you're drinking to get rid of a hangover, start \*thinking\* about reducing the amount you drink...!

Ya think?

Comments:

Melanie, its not 20 drinks a week its 20 \*standard\* drinks a week and I think you'll find they are smaller and weaker than you think.

Andrew you're right, a standard unit of alcohol contains 10 milliliters of ethanol, and many clubs pour drinks that contain much more than one standard unit. By the way that wikipedia article also says pregnant women can drink up to 4 units a week, which goes against what a lot of doctors say in the U.S. Apparently there are no easy answers here! So cheers to that. :)

I'm not sure I should comment as I'm drinking wine right now...and I'm not sure of how many "standard units" I've had....eek!
