JavaOne is almost here!

I cannot believe that JavaOne is exactly a week away! The weeks have been flying by, but we are anxiously awaiting all the fun we have in store for the folks coming to JavaOne. If you have always wanted to come to JavaOne, this is the year to do it! For all the latest on what is going on at JavaOne this year and so much more, go here. As you have seen, my fabulous friend and partner in all things here at Sun, Heidi and I have been recording videos of our road to JavaOne and posting to Sun Total Access Network each week. If you haven't seen any of them yet, make sure you go and check them out. Some of them are actually quite funny!  Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with Bill Sheppard and David Bryant to talk all about Blu-ray, This Ain't Your Dad's Java Live! from JavaOne, Java Utopia and much more. Make sure to stay tuned throughout the week of JavaOne to get the play by play from Heidi and I as well as a few guest surprises as well. Enjoy your day! :-) And just for a laugh, enjoy the latest video from one of my most favorite people, Chris Melissinos:

The Road To JavaOne 2009...

It's been weeks since I have blogged and I am sorry I have been such a bad blogger, but I am back and I have the blogging ju-ju again. Once again, my partner in crime and fabulous friend, Heidi (aka @_intellichick_) and I are going to be giving you the latest news and happenings on the road to JavaOne and on our time there. First up this week, is all about a few housekeeping details...can you say free passes? Contests?  Make sure to go over to Sun Total Access Network and subscribe to our channel to keep up with what we are doing.. or just look at the picture below and wonder what ARE we doing. On a side note, why does YouTube always pick the most attractive still? I have yet to find one that I have been like, wow, that looks good. Enjoy the video and make sure to tune in each week here or there to see what we are up to. :-)

♪ artist of the week. ♪

In the spirit of getting truly back into blogging, I thought I would bring back my artist of the week. It's not like that has been gone for a long time or anything, but I haven't really blogged about music or music that has my feet tapping or artists that touch my soul in a long while.  This week, I am going to tell you all about one of my most favorite bands ever (and no, it's not Pete Yorn, altho, go over and check out his new site! It's pretty sweet! ), The Damnwells. I stumbled upon The Damnwells accidently one evening in San Francisco. I was in need of some good live music, but it was a Monday night and I didn't see anyone I knew of that was playing. It was just one of those nights where I knew I needed to see something spectacular but had no idea how much this band would touch my soul. I looked at the line up at one of my favorite SF spots, Bottom of the Hill and noticed that this band from New York/LA was going to be playing. Hmmmm... I thought, why not? If anything, you can go take a listen, have a tasty adult beverage and see some live music. The worst thing would be that you left, right? So I hunkered down (it was a Monday in May..so a bit foggy and cold) and headed down to Bottom of the Hill. What my ears had in store for me will never leave me as I was turned into a Damnwells fan that night.

Who are they you might ask?! If you ask Alex Dezen, the lead singer, he would say "The Damnwells has always been about my songs and the extremely talented musicians and producers collaborating. The personnel have changed, but the essence--one of this week's vocabulary words for the 7th graders I teach--remains the same."

All in all,  The Damnwells, as a collective, have been making music since the turn of the century.

Still craving more information about the band? Then you might want to check out Chris Suchorsky’s excellent "Golden Days" documentary, which revolves around the trials and tribulations of the band. To read an excerpt from the documentary site, detailing the story of “Golden Days” go here

As I have been typing this blog, my wish of seeing them live again soon just came true. I was browsing their myspace page and found out that they are going to be down at SXSW at the same time we are down there. I am so excited!! To get to see them, Greg Laswell, Cary Brothers, The Decemberists and more..I can't wait!

So go ahead...stumble upon their myspace page for awhile and soak in the gorgeousness that The Damnwells are. Your ears will thank you. I guarantee it! Enjoy your weekend! :-D

Time Flies...

It seems like just yesterday I was heading down to Austin to attend SXSW 2008 and here I am back in the mix and planning our presence for this year with my fabulous friend, Intellichick. We have some super exciting things happening for JavaFX this year... we have a panel, we are having a very cool Apps Lounge on the show floor, a party that we are co-sponsoring with Whrrl and we look forward to meeting with all the creative, passionate and energetic people that flock to Austin for this show. I can't think of a better time for us to be down there with JavaFX. Watch out world, we are coming to conquer!

If all that wasn't enough,  I am super excited to see some of my favorite musicians down there this year. Greg Laswell, Cary Brothers and many more will be gracing Austin with their melodies and I can't wait to hear them live and rockin' out while I am down there.  All I need is a little PY up in the mix... can you get on that, Pete? ;-) BTW... Pete is on Twitter... to follow him... click here

If any of you are going to be down at SXSW, make sure to say hi! We created a Twitter channel for all of our SXSW activities around JavaFX: @JavaFX_SXSW, as well as our own channels (@maybeimright and @_intellichick_) will be crankin' out what we're doing, where we're at and much more. Also, make sure to check us out here on our blogs and on Sun Total Access Network as we give YOU the play by play.

I hope that everyone has a great weekend and stay tuned... I have lots more to say about SXSW... and we have a pretty exciting JavaFX announcement coming out next week. So stay tuned. ;-) Enjoy your weekend! :-D

♪ What's Getting Me Through The Weeks... ♪

Hello blogland!

Once again I have been quiet here on my blog as I have been so crazy busy heads down on all things JavaFX. The FX launch is quickly approaching, but I am so excited to show the world what we have in store. It's world domination. One step at a time. ;-) In any case, we have had many late nights and early mornings and when I am not in meetings or in the studio I am listening to my music full blast and getting things done.

What music has my toes tapping recently? I have downloaded a bunch of new releases from some of my favorite people ever, but my trusty and true music always has me coming back for more. Here is what has me going this week in no particular order:

1. Ryan Adams and The Cardinals:  Cardinology -- this it the latest release from the crew and it's as beautiful as everything they have ever released. I just recently discovered that they (as in The Cardinals) are on Twitter. If you are interested, follow them here. Along with everything else Mr. Adams does, I could be a happy girl listening to just him alone. But, I have to spread the love to all.

2.  Pete Yorn: musicforthemorningafter, Day I Forgot, Nightcrawler and miscellaneous b-side and non-released music that he hasn't put out. Pete just soothes my soul. Enough said. Next up is Pete on Twitter. Again, Mr. Yorn is one I could only listen to and never get tired of hearing him singing.

3. Greg Laswell: Through Toledo and Three Flights From Alto Nido. I am a fan of anything Mr. Laswell does.

4. Keane: Perfect Symmetry -- this is their latest release and definitely a different sound than we are use to from them. But I am slowly beginning to really enjoy this album.

5. Travis: Ode to J. Smith -- how do I love thee? Oh Let me count the ways. I could listen to anything Travis does on constant repeat and never get bored.

6. The Smiths: The Sounds of The Smiths -- The Smiths and Morrissey are my junior high and high school years. iTunes recently got this compilation and there is just something about Morrissey and his voice that will make me feel forever young. And again, one I can listen to over and over.

So there is a little taste of what has me going and helping me when I am heads down.  Go and check out some of the amazing artists (or all of them actually). As I always say, your ears will thank you.

Enjoy your day! :-D

It's a happy day in blogland today. My very good friend and partner in all things, Heidi Dailey is back in the blogosphere after a brief hiatus. We have missed you! :-)

My Name is Jenn Winger... and I approve this message.

Happy Friday everyone. I have been a quiet blogger lately partly because I was sick for a week or so, and partly because work has been absolutely insane. And partly because I was having major bloggers block. With all that is going on around the world and the U.S. elections coming up in 18 days, its time for me to get political on all of you for a quick moment.

Sun and Zembly (which has been in private beta) have launched a new application called MyPicks U.S. Election 2008. MyPicks Election 2008 provides you with a fun and simple way to participate and voice your opinion. How do you ask? It's easy!

For Facebook

For MySpace:
  • Login to your MySpace account
  • Install application
  • Play... (and invite your friends to play)

After installing the application, you can participate in a poll indicating how you will vote in the presidential election, provide your opinion on issues being debated by the candidates and state what you believe are the views of your friends. Invite your friends to play MyPicks U.S. Election 2008 by guessing their views on various issues and give them the opportunity to agree, disagree and comment on the issues themselves. It's a fun, interactive way to get involved!

Also, Heidi and I sat down on Wednesday and shot a quick video to tell you all about MyPicks Election 2008...enjoy!

And remember to get out and ROCK THE VOTE on November 4th!!!

Wednesday Sep 24, 2008

It's a Wednesday wrap up day...and other fun stuff (aka music!).

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I feel like I haven't really blogged in forever. Last week Heidi and I were at the Web 2.0 Expo in New York doing what we do best. We blogged a lot (well, Heidi did...), we twittered, we shot some new videos for Sun Total Access Network and we hosted our very first BoF. While I didn't feel the conference gave us the what's now, new and next, we did get to talk to lots of interesting people and got to see Project Kenai and Zembly in action in the Sun booth. And our BoF went really, really well!  We got to talk all about being social butterflies at Sun and how we use it to grow developer communities. And thanks to JB (John Brock) we got to have some technical expertise in the room to talk Kenai and Zembly. Thanks again JB! Our trip to New York was fast and furious, but we had some fun along the way and came home with our brains a buzzin'.

I am in the throws of planning world domination for JavaFX at the moment, so I have been listening to lots of music. Some new, some old, but mostly, some that I can listen to any day, all day and helps me when I am plugging through a never ending to do list. And BTW, I am sort of digging the whole Genuis function of iTunes. I have tried songs from all different genres and each time, the playlists have been bringing up songs that I love (but then again..it is my music library and why wouldn't I like it) and a lot that I haven't listened to in a long time (that is the problem with having over 15K songs in your library..and that isn't even all my music!) So here is a very short list of what is playing now and what has my toes tapping this week:

 1.  Phoenix - United (I was catching up on the new season of Entourage last weekend and they had one of my favorite Phoenix songs at the end of the episode...If I Ever Feel Better...and I have been grooving to this album a lot this week).

2. Minibar - Road Movies and Desert After Rain (I get to see Simon playing with Juliana Hatfield tomorrow night, so I am very much in a Minibar mood. Plus, to get to see Simon in my neck of the woods is always fun. Haven't seen him since I was last in LA for my birthday, so it will be good to hang out and see what's up.)

3. Keane - Hopes and Fears (I absolutely love this band...their new album is scheduled for release in November and I cannot wait!)

4.  Ryan Adams - every single album. I have them all playing on shuffle and he's always playing in my car, in my house, in the office. I lurve him and his music.

5. Romantica - America - I beg you all to listen to this album and tell me that you won't fall in love with them. It just won't happen. You can't help but listen to this beautiful album over and over again.

 6. Sigur Ros - Takk - beautiful, etherial, yet rocker with a bit of an edge music. I totally dig them.

7. Beastie Boys - Ill Communication - being in New York last week made me want to listen to the BB. I am kickin' it old school with this album.

8. Sloan - A Sides Win - I just love these boys! They always know how to put on a rockin' show!!

So there you have it. Not quite a top ten, but there are way more than ten albums that have been pumping through my speakers so far this week. Now I am off to tackle that every growing to do list, so listen up and play it loud! Enjoy the day! :-D

Morning One of Web 2.0

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Heidi and I arrived safely to New York and we are up and at em and ready to take on our first day at Web 2.0. As our morning cup of coffee kicks in and we are battling the "it's only 5:30am in California" syndrome, we are also super excited to tackle our busy schedule. Today its all about the marketing tracks for us. From a track all about viral marketing, to web analytics, we will be learning all there is to know about all things marketing in the Web 2.0 space.  The general session keynote doesn't begin until later this afternoon, so our morning will be spent in sessions as well as getting some videos for Sun Total Access Network. I definitely have some ideas of people we want to talk to.

Last night we hit up one of my favorite places to go for some good food in New York, Cafeteria. Located in Chelsea, you can't help but get the Mac Attack Trio of their amazing mac and cheese.  It was just as good as I remembered it and I am sure we will go once more before we leave.

Stay tuned for an update later today from both Heidi and I to let you know what we learned this morning from our sessions. Enjoy your day! :-D

We're excited to get there and look to hear from us soon. :-) My iPod is fully charged with lots of good music..off to SFO I go! Enjoy your day!

Tuesday May 20, 2008

flipping out.

I have to confess to something (although its nothing terrible).  I watch Oprah. I do, I watch The Oprah Show and TiVO it everday. Sure there are days that I fast forward through a lot of it, but there are other days that I stay glued. Last November, she had a show that featured young and successful business entrepeneurs. There were many guests on her show such as Sean "Diddy" Combs, and some young, successful people vying to be his assistant at Sean John plus many more interesting guests. What immediately caught my eye was that she featured the founders of YouTube as well. Why did this catch my eye?! Well, on that day, Oprah officially launched her own YouTube channel and filmed her first clip with this handy little digital video camera called The Flip Video Ultra Series which was later coined on the show, the YouTube camera.  What I love about this camera is that its super easy to use. With only four buttons, it’s incredibly simple to record, zoom, playback instantly or delete the videos you don't want anyone else to see. ;-)  I think what is most brilliant about this camera is that it is plug and play. Once you are done recording you can literally plug your camera into any USB port on your computer because it has an extremely convenient USB arm that is part of the camera. And..it comes in a bunch of different colors so you can choose a color that matches your personality best. Mine is pink. So why am I going on and on about this camera? Well, once I saw the camera on Oprah, I quickly went on the web to see when I could get my hands on one because it was around that time that Heidi and I had discussed launching our own YouTube channel which all of you now know as Sun Total Access Network. I was looking for a camera that would be easy to record with and easy to upload to YouTube and The Flip was the perfect camera. We tested it out while we were down at SXSW and we both fell in love with how easy it was to use. In fact, we kept on going on and on about them that our fabulous manager and senior director got our team a few flips so that everyone had them and could capture videos real time. Since getting mine, I carry it with me wherever I go. We used them at CommunityOne and JavaOne and we will continue to use them at each event we go to. I am in the process of making our road to JavaOne music video and many of the clips that are part of the video were filmed on my flip. That project is almost done and once it is, I will be posting it to SunTAN so make sure to keep on checking for new video updates from us. Heidi will also be down next week and we will be filming a new video segment a la the flip for the channel as well...so stay tuned. Also, be sure to check back here later this when I feature my artist of the week as well as a video of me and the ever so fabulous, Chris Melissinos. :-D Enjoy your day!
