Week-End Trends: Retail volume continues post-holiday recalibration

Email activity and seasonal trends during the past week:

The Retail Email Index: The top online retailers sent each of their subscribers 2.7 promotional emails on average during the week ending Jan. 7, 2011. That’s down 15% week-over-week, down 42% from where it was four weeks ago, and up 11% year-over-year.

Based on trends in past years, over the next week or two we should establish a new baseline for retail email volume that should hold for the first three quarters of this year. It appears that new baseline will likely be around 3.0 promotional emails a week on average per subscriber.

The Retail Email Participation Rate: Friday was the most popular day to send retail emails last week.

The Retail Email Seasonality Meter: Seasonal messaging will be soft the next couple of weeks until late in the month when Valentine’s Day messaging increases significantly.
