Three Fail-Proof Blog Post Title Tips

Blogging is an essential part of most content marketing plans. For blogging beginners, writing titles of blog posts can sometimes be more difficult than writing the blog posts themselves. After all, the body of a blog can be written in a manner similar to the format of print stories found in newspapers and magazines; blog titles, however, rarely benefit from mimicking the snappy headlines and playfully punny heds found in those same publications.

By following these tips, however, blogging beginners will be well on their way to crafting expert blog post titles:

1) Be Brief and Direct. When writing a blog post title, it’s not the time or the place to show off your wordplay skills or awe-inducing cleverness. Instead, be direct and brief in summarizing the post. For example, though it might not be as exciting or creative, “Three Fail-Proof Blog Post Title Tips” is a more effective blog post title than “What’s in a Name?” or “The Secret to Writing Artful Weblog Headlines that will Deeply Resonate with your Online Readership.”

2) Use Keywords. As noted above, “What’s in a Name?” and “The Secret to Writing Artful Weblog Headlines that will Deeply Resonate with your Online Readership” are not particularly great blog post titles. This is not only because one is indirect and the other is wordy, but also because they fail to include essential topic keywords that can help searchers discover your content. If your blog post is about puppies, be sure to include the term “puppies” in the blog title. If your post is about kittens, include “kittens.” Use those keywords to your advantage.

3) Utilize Ranking or List Formats. When folks are reading online, they like their content organized in bite-sized chunks. Formatting your blog post in ranking or list form, and matching your title to this format, will draw eyes to your copy. Examples: “The Best Pop Songs of Summer 2013,” “Three Strawberry Recipes You Have to Try,” “Nine Ways to Save Money on Groceries”
