This Is No Fantasy: CMOs Are NFL Football Fans On Social Media

As a CMO your job is of course a very detailed, often-hectic, highly-demanding one. Being the keeper of a brand flame is an all-encompassing position to say the least. However, more and more CMOs are realizing the power of their own personal brand and as such are becoming active in social media. 

We are pleased to announce a new feature and addition to The CMO Corner of the Modern Marketing Blog: The CMO Social Stat of the Month

In partnership with Leadtail – a social strategy firm that has built a panel of over 1,000 B2B and B2C CMOs and marketing executives located in North America and active on Twitter that develops social insights reports on CMOs and other decision makers – we'll release a social stat each month based on data from the previous month.

The stat will be presented via a chart similar to the one below. 

Here's a quick legend regarding the colors and what they represent: 

  • Blue = Did not rank in the Top 50 in the previous month
  • Green = Moved up in ranking over last month
  • Red = Moved down in ranking over last month
  • Black = No change over last month

Below is The CMO Social Stat of the Month for September 2015 - The Top Hashtags Used By CMOs over the course of the month. As you can see #NFL checked in at #37, which is significant given the fact that so many events also took place in September with #Inbound15 (Inbound), and #AWXII (AdvertisingWeek) breaking into the top 50, too. 

I wonder how many CMOs are fantasy footballers, too? My guess is quite a few are. 

You'll also see that many CMOs paid homage to September 11th with #NeverForget coming in at #34.

The there is Apple (#AppleEvent), which held it's most recent product unveiling event in September. "While the reviews were mixed," says Karri Carlson, VP Social Insights at Leadtail. "It is still one of a very few companies in the world that can get so many influential people to devote their attention to what is essentially a high-production value infomercial."

In terms of movers over the previous month (August) #Innovation, #Advertising, and #Analytics gained ground over last month's Top 50 while #Quote, #Facebook, and the #GOPDebate lost ground, but still held enough CMO attention to remain on the Top 50.

One last observation is regarding mobile. You'll notice that #mobile was a mover, climbing to #7. My assumption is #mobile will remain in the top 10 for quite some time for every CMO knows the value and importance of mobile marketing as part of an overall cross-channel marketing experience.
