Chart: How Many Streaming Videos Do We Watch?

How much streaming video do we watch? Lots.

I compiled some of Nielsen's reports from October 2009 to December 2011 and plotted a time-lapse bubble chart for 5 of the consistent top-10 sites.

The following trends really astounded me:

Unique visitors to those sites increased a modest 18%

Meanwhile, total videos streamed from those sites doubled from 11 billion to 22 billion in December 2011.

That means that the average number of videos watched by each visitor is a whopping 137  per month on those sites (up from 81 in 2009).

Far and away, YouTube is the dominant leader in the market.  Not only is it way off in the top right hand-corner of a double-logarithmic scale graph, but it you click through and watch the motion of the bubbles, you will see that it has widened the lead substantially in the last two years.

Tracy Germain recently posted a very useful topliners article on Eloqua's Social Suite and Cloud Connectors, which includes a tutorial on setting up a Youtube embed.

With a growing audience and increasing attention span, it might be time for someone in your marketing department to call out "standby: lights, camera, action!"
