Email marketing: The Weekly Inbox volume 43

Welcome to the next installment of The Weekly Inbox. Steve’s on vacation this week, so I’m bringing you my picks for volume 43.

Here are some emails that caught my eye this past week.


Everybody loves free stuff. And messaging that sticks to the “free” aspect is going to work like a charm, especially when it’s a cult brand like Kiehl’s giving away said free stuff. This email had the subject line “5 samples, just for you!” and packed a ton of punch into a really simple GIF (just two images), so loading time was nil and all I wanted to do was get my hands on those cute lil freebies.

Help wanted

The folks at J. Crew are masterful at addressing wardrobe woes at the exact moment you need a little help. Like when this email asked me what I was going to wear to work the next day. I actually had no clue, and the model looked amazing, and next thing I knew I was popping over to J. Crew during my lunch break… Anyways, I love the concept and the three-outfit list that continues as you scroll down.

Like a heat wave

Seattle has had a surge of hot weather this July, so this REI email really hit home. The headline “Stay Cool, Have Fun” gives off hip-parent vibes, like the Mother of All Outdoor Adventure is wishing me well as I head off to enjoy the sunshine. The whole “beat the heat” theme was spot-on for the height of summer, from the product laydowns in the sand to the action shots to a secondary grid with relevant products.

The new LBD

Piperlime is a huge retailer that sells a number of brands and styles, but I like how they zeroed in one trend, destructed denim, and told an editorial-style story. The lower headline has a literary quality and manages to use alliteration without sounding cheesy. And I love how the #NOTEVENTRYING hashtag played off the subject line “Date-night denim…” because a good pair of jeans is totally the new little black dress.



Cute kids on the block

It’s hard to believe we’re entering back-to-school season already! This email from Pottery Barn Kids does a great job showcasing the featured product in a quintessential BTS setting that still feels fresh. Plus, like Steve, I’m a sucker for clean design and straightforward copy, and this email has both.
