Author: Michelle McGinnis

Facebook officials announced today that it plans to build a new, 300,000-square foot data center just 60 miles outside the Arctic Circle in Lulea, Sweden. The social networking giant scoured locations around Europe and chose the Northern locale for its low temperatures and access to renewable hydropower.

While the story conjures up images of Mark Zuckerberg in a parka, the move to put data centers in remote, often chilly, locations isn’t new. The need for cheap, renewable energy is just that strong.

So we decided to spotlight 5 other cool data centers we’ve seen around the web.
