3 Easy Ways Your Business Can Start Giving Back

It’s the start of a new year – a time when reflection occurs and resolutions are made. Instead of those cliché declarations to weight lose, what if we made a pledge to give back?

At Eloqua, we recently created a service committee comprised of representatives from each office location with the goal of improving our local communities. From Boston to Toronto to San Francisco and London, each Eloqua office is serving their community in a variety of ways.

Interested in doing something similar in 2012? It’s easier than you think. Below are a few ways to get started.

1. Create a “Drive”
Whether it’s a clothing, food, or toiletry drive, getting fellow employees to donate something from home is a simple task that goes a very long way. Last month, our colder office locations organized coat drives to benefit local families. There are always lots of coat and food drives taking place around the holiday season. All you have to do is find one accepting donations. Be sure to place donation boxes in high-traffic areas throughout the office and send out lots of reminders!

2. Get Out of the Office
Cube dwellers rarely need an excuse to get out of the office for a few hours. Volunteering is the perfect opportunity to give back while also promoting team-building. For those who don’t mind getting their hands dirty, Habitat for Humanity is a super organization where volunteers help build homes for families in need of affordable shelter. If your company hosts customer events and/or user conferences, consider partnering with Habitat for half a day. Attendees get a unique opportunity to network while doing hands-on work for the community.

Your office might also consider spending a day at a local food bank. Food banks depend on the kindness of volunteers to roll up their sleeves and help package donations.

3. Get Competitive
Play up your company’s competitive spirit in order to increase donations for a worthy cause.

We challenged our male employees to grow a moustache for “Movember.” Those participating were pitted against one another to raise the most money for men’s health while also vying for votes among the Eloqua community for “best stache.” By sharing photos over internal communication tools like Salesforce’s Chatter or Yammer, you can boost morale even when your company is spread across many locations.
