The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:
Newegg, 9/9 — Last Chance for Back-to-School Bargains, plus our External Hard Drive Giveaway!
Newegg had serious image problems with this email yesterday. While I wasn’t on top of it, luckily Andrew Kordek over at Sears and DJ Waldow over at Bronto alerted me to the issue. Here’s what happened: If you tried to open this email yesterday morning, an account log-in screen would pop-up. However, it wasn’t for you to log-in to your Newegg account. Rather, it was to log into the password-protected server that was storing the source files for the main images in this email. My good friend and email IT trouble-shooter Aaron Smith at Smith-Harmon speculated that most likely the tech team previewing the email didn’t notice the problem because they were logged in to their server already. Now that wouldn’t have been so awful if you could have closed that pop-up and moved on to other emails in your inbox, but I heard from several other people that said that opening the Newegg email eventually crashed their browser or froze it to the point that they had to reboot their computer.
Newegg very wisely sent an apology email to everyone who opened this email, explaining that the issue was caused by a server outage:

Ann Taylor, 9/7 — ANN Cares Card: Receive Fall Savings and Battle Breast Cancer
Although Ann Taylor doesn’t mention Breast Cancer Awareness Month explicitly, this is the same campaign that they ran last year so I’m going to call it—This is the first reference to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Harry & David, 9/8 — NEW Lower Delivery, Our Gift to You
In their first holiday message this year, Harry & David focuses on inflation and how they’ve cut their delivery charges.
Dick’s Sporting Goods, 9/8 — Please tell us your opinions!
Like several other retailers lately (see Aug. 22 AM Inbox and Aug. 20 AM Inbox), Dick’s is asking for subscriber feedback on their emails. Ahead of the holidays, that’s a smart tactic. On the downside, Dick’s sent this from a new sender address instead of the one that subscribers were used to seeing and had whitelisted (hopefully).
Walgreens, 9/5 — Save on Walgreens branded products at the new W brand site
Walgreens announces the launch of wbrand.com.
