AM Inbox: The Mystery of Mystery Deal Emails

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

The Children's Place, 4/29 -- Free Shipping + Mystery Savings! Check out this deal before it disappears!
For me the mystery of Mystery Deal emails is Why does anybody send them? Every time I get one, I find myself asking lots of questions… How is it determined who will receive which potential offer? Pure lottery? Previous purchase history? Buy more, save more?

This Children's Place email sent today requires the purchaser to enter a promo code upon check-out in order to reveal the deal. Personally, I would feel disappointed if I committed the time to load up my shopping cart, to then only receive one of the lower savings percentages. I would again be left wondering... if my luck were better (or I had purchased more, or were a more frequent customer) might I have received 50% off?? Also, The Children's Place sent this offer three times today, which is very risky. The heavy frequency could definitely annoy some subscribers, possibly causing them to unsubscribe, or worse yet, report as spam.

1-800-FLOWERS.COM, 4/3 -- What will your Mystery Savings be?
A slightly different approach to the Mystery Deal email taken by 1-800-FLOWERS.COM in this Apr. 3 campaign, is to reveal the offer immediately upon a click to the email. I'll give points for the execution and creative use of the animated spinning wheel, but I still have questions of how the offer is determined. My deal is the Free Shipping/No Service Charge (somewhat disappointing, seeing the potential 25% off on the spinning wheel). I tried everything to see if I might be able to get a better deal: clicking different places on the email, forwarding the email to myself (and my husband), and finally viewing the email as a webpage, and removing the tracking info from the URL. No luck for me… still the same deal!
