AM Inbox: The latest hot NFL stat

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

NFLshop, 1/13 — Top 20 Player Jerseys of 2008 - Where Does Your Favorite Player Rank?
Your sales data can be of interest to more than just your bosses and shareholders. In this email, NFLshop mines their data on sales to create this list of the most popular player jerseys. To NFL fans, theses are another set of interesting player stats. It’s a creative way of packaging promotional content so that it seems more informational. This is in the same vein as Northern Tool including a list of their most popular product categories and searches in their emails (see Dec. 30 AM Inbox). Can you think of other data mining tactics that would reveal trends that your subscribers would be interested in? Just like with product reviews, customers are hungry for intel on what other people are doing.

Dick’s Sporting Goods, 1/13 — Free Shipping + Return Shipping on All Footwear‏
Dick’s Sporting Goods has redesigned their emails, abandoning their 3-column postcard template in favor of a 2-column longer-form template. Their postcard emails had a lot of static content; generally only the hero image changed. The new template makes room for Dick’s to highlight individual products, and also features a vertical navigation bar that’s similar to Sports Authority’s (see Sept. 17 AM Inbox). Here’s the new design:

And here’s the old design from a Dec. 30 email:

HPshopping, 1/13 — Your HP Home & Home Office Store Deals - Week of January 13, 2009‏
The design of this HP email is really different and interesting. The ornate content boxes create a center line that draws your eye down the email. Build around groups of three’s, it’s very scannable. Just like Sony did recently (see Jan. 9 AM Inbox), HP highlights content from the Consumer Electronics Show, adding a bit of news to the email. Newegg did the same in an email yesterday.
