AM Inbox: Subject Line and Cross-Brand Promo Misfires

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

Lucky Brand, 1/28 -- You need to check this out...
This email from Lucky Brand features a very compelling subject line. It jumped out at me from everything else that was in my inbox this morning. Unfortunately, the content and offer of the email itself left me underwhelmed. There was little in the email to support the excitement of the subject line, so the overall feeling was of disappointment. Lucky would have been better off with a subject line that was better matched for the content of the email, such as "Introducing our New Heritage Plaids", and pocketing this one for something more noteworthy and/or relevant.





































Diapers.com, 1/28 -- Enter to win free cord blood banking
This email from Diapers.com struck an odd chord with me. Diapers.com and CBR (Cord Blood Registry) are both parters of BabyCenter.com (of which Johnson & Johnson is the parent company). I realize that when I sign up for BabyCenter emails, I am agreeing to receive mails from its partners, and this email does have a link to Unsubscribe from Diapers.com Partner Emails, however the partnership and the choice to have the email sent by Diapers.com still feels a little odd (I have received previous emails from "BabyCenter Partners", which would have seemed like a more logical sender in this instance). The decision of whether or not to save cord blood is highly personal, and there seems to be a lack of sensitivity to the many who may have religious or other reasons for not wanting to receive unsolicited information and/or offers concerning CBR.
