AM Inbox: Preferences and Pairings

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

Janie and Jack, 2/6 -- Preppy Classics For Him & Bright Poppies For Her
This email from Janie and Jack gives equal weight to products for boys and girls in the subject line (other than the boys' product being mentioned first). The primary message, however, is geared toward the "Vintage Convertible" product for the boys, while the "Poppy Red" line for the girls merely gets the secondary banner treatment (and a fraction of the email's real-estate). I decided to visit the Janie and Jack Email Preference Center to see if I could sign up for emails geared more specifically to girls, but the only preference options they have are Subscribe and Unsubscribe. Janie and Jack is missing out on an opportunity for customer engagement by not providing their audience with more options for the types of emails they would like to receive. 

Williams-Sonoma Home, 2/7 -- 20% Off Select Kitchen Islands
The primary promotion of this email from Williams-Sonoma Home is 20% off kitchen islands, but it should be noted that they have done a nice job with cross-selling pendant lamps. The secondary product section of the email features five stacked banners that each showa kitchen island paired with a pendant lamp in a similar design style.  Four of the five lamps featured are branded Rejuvenation, one of the Williams-Sonoma sister brands. It is nice that clicking on the Rejuvenation lamps still takes the potential buyer to the product on the Williams-Sonoma site, avoiding the inconvenience of being directed to a separate site. My only recommendation to improve this email would be to have the design style "pairing" text be linkable to a page on the site that features both the island and pendant lamp together—and possibly any other products that would compliment said design style.

























LOFT, 2/7 -- Hit refresh! Select NEW styles NOW 40% off
This delightful email from LOFT is great example of how to feature a lot of product without over-cluttering the page. The layout is eye-catching with the primary message in bold sandwiched between upper and lower rows of images of models wearing products, and there are 12 frames of animation that rotate to show several outfits overall. I would have preferred the animation to be looped, in order to have another opportunity to view an image I missed the first time, but all-in-all, this email is a nice example of animation done right.
