AM Inbox: GearDirect’s frozen body recovered from avalanche disaster

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

GearDirect, 10/2 — 50% Off Preseason Sale From Geardirect.com
I was critical of GearDirect when they shut down in July without telling their subscribers (see Aug. 27 AM Inbox). Well, now they’re back and they’re suddenly emailing their subscribers again. While they acknowledge their absence in the body of the email, the subject line makes no mention of the passage of time. It’s been two and a half months since they last emailed, they should be trying to reengage and I think that includes a subject line that screams, “GearDirect is back!” But they do personalize the email with the subscriber’s name and they do include both a phone number and email address, both of which are good things—especially the later. The other misstep that they make with this email is that they sent it from a new email address, not the one that subscribers had whitelisted before.

FTD, 10/1 — Help Fight Breast Cancer today with the FTD Pink Ribbon Collection
FTD is working with the Gal to Gal Foundation to promote a virtual walk when people create avatars to show their support. It’s a very Second Life-like idea…very web 2.0. And it’s different from what I’ve seen other retailers doing around Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Unfortunately, the banner didn’t link to galtogalwalk.org, but at least the banner included the URL.

Bloomingdale’s, 10/1 — Little Pink Book: Shop For the Cure
While most retailers are offering a selection of products that the sale of which support breast cancer awareness projects, Bloomingdale’s is the only one I’ve seen that offers a pink gift card. I think this is a great idea because it allows people to show their support without filling their closets and kitchens with pink apparel and appliances. I can tell you this, while my wife supports the cause, she hates pink.

Neiman Marcus, 10/2 — It's that time of year! The 2007 CHRISTMAS BOOK is now online!
Neiman’s Christmas Books book is out and includes their latest selection of Fantasy Gifts, which are always fun to ogle.
