AM Inbox: First Veterans Day reference

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

Circuit City, 11/8 — Veterans Day Sale--ends Saturday
Circuit City gives us our first Veterans Day reference. I’ll be watching Veterans Day references closely this year, looking for signs that retailers are eager to make sales now before getting too far into what is being widely forecast as a crappy holiday season. This seemed to be the case around Columbus Day, when I saw multifold more Columbus Day-themed emails than during 2006 (see Columbus Day Season Finale). Last year, I took note of only a handful of Veterans Day references between Nov. 5 and 9. This year, there have been more Veterans Day references on Nov. 8 alone than during all of last year. So it would appear that Veterans Day is following the same trend as Columbus Day.

Also in the email, Circuit City taps their subscribers in their search for the next Firedog dog for their commercials.

Petco, 11/8 — Pet Lover, Your Dog Has a Wish List...
Continuing the dog theme, I couldn’t help but comment on this creative. I really like the concept of the dog writing a wish list, but there are a few things about the execution that popped out at me as extra strange (beyond the premise of a dog writing a wish list). (1) The dog took the time to write in three different colors to make the wish list easier to read. That’s one considerate dog. (2) Rather than putting the insertion mark higher or beginning the next line a little lower, the dog leaves a big gap so as not to crowd the insertion mark. That gap is very distracting and makes that line a little difficult to read. Bad dog. (3) The dog leaves his master milk and doggie treats rather than cookies (or some other yummy human food). And, this is my favorite, (4) once the dog places the dish of doggie treats on the table, he just doesn’t want to move them—even when he discovers that the plate is in the way of him writing his note. So he writes the tail end of his post script (the “S!”) on the edge of the plate. That’s one stubborn dog. Anyway, it’s a fun concept; the execution was just a little distracting for me.
