The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:
Blair, 11/1 — Save with 20% off our election winners and 99¢ per item shipping
A number of retailers have used an election theme in their emails in recent weeks, including Bluefly, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gap, Nascar and Road Runner Sports. Here are a couple more: In this email, Blair equates their product rates with an election, giving them another opportunity to tout their top-rated products.
Lands’ End, 11/2 — Free Shipping gets our vote - no minimum order
And in this email, Lands’ End has a little fun and announces that they’ve voted for free shipping. It’s not deep, but the little mock political disclaimer at the bottom is cute. (However, I do wonder if the blue background color is supposed to be a subliminal vote for Obama.)
Toys “R” Us, 11/2 — Super Deals on iCarly, Guitar Hero, iPods and more!
Toys “R” Us has replaced the “Store Locator” link in their navigation bar with a “Want It Today?” link. The new program allows you to locate products in local stores, although it doesn’t have store staff put the product aside for you. But the “Want It Today?” program is certainly a first step toward a “Buy online, pick up in store” program later on. But the real missed opportunity for this rollout was that they didn’t geo-segment the new nav bar addition, since the new program is only up in running in a few cities. Toys “R” Us doesn’t ask for subscribers’ zip codes when they sign up. If they had, they’d have known that I live in New York, where their program isn’t live yet. Having that “Store Locator” link back would be more useful to me.
DisneyShopping, 10/31 — Introducing the NEW DisneyShopping.com!
After introducing a new header and nav bar for their emails last week to match their new website design (see Oct. 30 AM Inbox), they’ve now officially announced the new website to subscribers—just in time for the holidays. This email gives you a glance at the new website and succinctly outlines some of the changes.
AbeBooks, 10/31 — The Avid Reader: Books Celebrating the Brightest Brief Stars
They didn’t mention Halloween, but it seemed apt that AbeBooks would pick Oct. 31 to celebrate those that had died young. From musicians Otis Redding and Janis Joplin, to literary figures Sylvia Plath and Anne Frank, to athletes Terry Fox and Pat Tillman—this email covered a huge range of stars and included details about their lives, their cause of death and links to biographies about them. I spent several minutes reading it over. Very sticky material.
