AM Inbox: Crate & Barrel's Thanksgiving countdown

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

Crate & Barrel, 10/30 — Thanksgiving Countdown Ideas. Free Shipping, too
Now that we’re done counting down to Halloween, let the Thanksgiving and Christmas countdowns begin! With this email, Crate & Barrel starts their weekly countdown until Thanksgiving. They ran the same campaign last year (see Nov. 16 AM Inbox) and unfortunately it doesn’t look like they’ve shored up the weak points—mainly, a lack of calls-to-action. They may have actually made them worse. Not only are there no links or buttons at the end of the main message, there are no captions on the images telling subscribers what the product is and how much it costs.

Eddie Bauer, 10/30 — Free Shipping, no minimum purchase + over 300 Original Gifts
Eddie Bauer gives us a proto-typical Christmas email. It presents gifts in different categories, by sales popularity, by gender and by price point—giving subscribers several different avenues to approach their gift searching. And to help get your attention and draw you into the email, Eddie Bauer animates the snow globe, which is a nice little touch.

And here’s the animated portion of this email:

Bloomingdale’s, 10/30 — Extra 30-50% Off Already Reduced Sale Items
Just like you should be careful with your placeholder subject lines (if you use them), you should also be careful with your placeholder alt text. In this email, Bloomingdale’s uses “Name Of Image” has their placeholder alt text…which never got replaced. For non-product images like this one, you might be better off with no alt text by default or simply using your brand name (in this case “Bloomingdale’s”). Does anyone have any good placeholder alt text tactics to share?
