AM Inbox: Cooking.com’s wish list twist

>>I’m back from the Email Insider Summit, which was great. I’ll get us caught up over the next couple of days.

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

Cooking.com, 12/5 — Beggars Can Be Choosers: a WIN-WIN offer for you and your friends (Coupon Inside!)
Rather than running a wish list sweepstakes as some retailers have done, Cooking.com has an interesting twist on wish list incentives. If you forward your wish list to friends and family through Cooking.com, then they’ll include a 15%-off coupon along with it. They then turn around and give you a 15%-off coupon for sharing your wish list. That’s a nice viral incentive, and gives Cooking.com a chance to pitch their brand and email program to new customers.

ShopNBC, 12/7 — Jingle Perils An unexpected twist
Starting with an email on Friday, ShopNBC has been running a “Jingle Perils” campaign where the call-to-action in the email is to watch the latest webisode. The landing page features the video and all the previous videos arranged in Advent calendar style. There’s only a “Shop Holiday Gifts” link at the bottom of the page. The soft sell approach of this campaign—which highlights the benefits of shopping online at ShopNBC.com—stands in sharp contrast to the hard sell and big discounts from nearly all the other retailers that I track.

Sephora, 12/5 — Everything ships free!
I don’t know if this was a super rush job or what, but this text-only is really out of character for Sephora—and frankly off-brand. It has the smell of a mistake. When I first viewed the above-the-fold portion of the email, I thought they’d left the unsubscribe link and mailing address off the email and therefore weren’t in compliance with CAN-SPAM. The huge amount of white space really makes me scratch my head.
