AM Inbox: Christmas countdowns that count down

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

Sports Authority, 12/4 — 25% Off - Last Friends & Family Event for 2008!
In this email Sports Authority introduces a holiday countdown, as several other retailers have done. However, based on how they implemented it, I’m not sure if they’re committed to running it again. I say that because they aren’t updating the image file so that the actual date is shown. The screenshot below was taken today, but still says that it’s Dec. 4. If you’re going to do a Christmas countdown for the long haul, update the countdown image each night so that if someone opens your email the next day, the correct date is shown.

In addition to introducing the countdown image, Sports Authority also introduces a holiday header, adding snowflakes to their usual header. Thus far, 26% of the retailers I track have introduced a holiday header with either a holiday or winter theme or with navigation to gift offerings.

HPshopping, 12/4 — Stay Connected on the Go! Check out the NEW HP Mini 1000!
This is great, standout email design. It invites you to reach out and put your hands “around it” or hold up your existing laptop to it to compare sizes.

Blue Nile, 12/4 — Introducing Blue Nile's 23 Days of Christmas
Blue Nile is the latest retailer to launch an “X Days of Christmas” campaign—although I’m confused that they’re mentioning it first in their emails on the fourth day of the campaign. They sent an email on Dec. 1 but didn’t mention this at all.
