AM Inbox: Barnes & Noble adds social features to profiles

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

Barnes & Noble, 10/26 — Introducing My B&N - It's All About You
Taking a page from LibraryThing and Goodreads, Barnes & Noble has added several social network features to their customer profile pages. Unlike Petco, which has a social network that’s separate from their ecommerce site (see Aug. 25 AM Inbox), Barnes & Noble is integrating the two, combining social sharing with wish lists and information on store events. That may prove to be a unique winning combination.

REI, 10/24 — Learn How to Layer + Free Shipping on Gore-Tex Footwear
Don’t overestimate your customers’ knowledge. Don’t assume they understand the difference between different computer specs, the benefits of varying TV features, or how to choose clothes. In this email, REI presents links to articles on How to Dress in Layers and How to Choose Wool Clothing while promoting clothes for the three layers. The message is a mix of service and promotion that’s appealing.

Crutchfield, 10/24 — An important message from Bill Crutchfield
In light of Circuit City’s woes, Crutchfield wants to reassure their customers that they are well-positioned financially to survive the current recession—and therefore safe to shop at this holiday season. They have a pretty reassuring story to tell.

Costco, 10/25 — New Lower Prices on Buyer Favorites!
Costco is the latest top retailer to introduce product reviews. Costco isn’t offering an incentive to earlier reviewers, like many others have when launching their review programs.
