AM Inbox: Another retailer takes our Double Dog Dare

>>Two-Click Survey: Are you in compliance with the new CAN-SPAM rules that went into effect in July? See the results.

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

TigerDirect, 8/21 — Upgrade & SAVE Spectacular...PC Kit, Memory, Hard Drives & More
Here’s more evidence that marketers are taking up the eec’s recent Double Dog Dare to ask subscribers to rate their emails. At the bottom of this email, TigerDirect has added a “Rate Us” icon that links to a survey about their email experience (see below). Newegg made a similar addition this week (see Aug. 20 AM Inbox).

Abercrombie & Fitch, 8/21 — Have What It Takes To Be The Next A&F Model?
Much like Apple’s email promoting the iPhone 3G last month (see July 2 AM Inbox), this Abercrombie email’s sole call-to-action is a link to a video. But rather than linking to the video under their A&F Casting tab, they link to a long, meandering video with lot of kids dancing in stores—and it’s not until the end of the video that they tell you that you have to be a store associate to participate in the casting call. Then the video dumps you on the A&F homepage, rather than on a page with info about casting or store hiring. This is an example of what not to do with your landing pages.

Bluefly, 8/21 — EXTRA 15% OFF Designer Handbags (Hurry...Today Only)
Although I don’t talk about it in my Oopsy Hall of Fame, one of the most common errors that I encounter is broken links. I experienced that with this Bluefly email but was pleased with the error message that came up. Rather than a generic 409 error message, I got this branded 409 error message that apologizes for the problem, gives me a link to the Bluefly homepage and tells me the number for customer service. So even though the process left the rails, it never abandoned the brand experience.
