Solaris 11

What is Solaris? Solaris is a Unix operating system originally developed by Sun Microsystems. It superseded their earlier SunOS in 1993. Oracle Solaris, as it is now known, has been owned by Oracle Corporation since Oracle's acquisition of Sun in January 2010.  Solaris is known for its scalability, especially on SPARC systems, and for originating many innovative features such as DTrace, ZFS and Time Slider. Solaris supports SPARC-based and x86-based workstations and servers from Sun and other vendors, with efforts underway to port to additional platforms. Solaris 11 was released in Nov 2011 and is refeed to as Solaris 11 11/11.

Business justification: why move to Solaris 11

What are the compelling reasons to move or upgrade to Solaris 11? What does a CTO want from an Operating System (OS)? The OS must be safe, secure, easy to upgrade, have lots of application support, clear roadmap, easy to manage, fast, good and cheap. Does Solaris 11 offer these features?

  • Return on Investment → power aware dispatcher & other power management improvements will decrease your power bill.
  • Zones → Virtualization: reduce footprint. Exclusive IP, Read Only Zone Root.
  • Image Packaging System → IPS: Improved software delivery system.
  • OS Installation → modernized automated installation, live CD.
  • Security → Solaris has a proper authorization delegation model. Crypto optimizations. Guidelines.
  • The Desktop front end → Gnome: much richer and easier to use than Solaris 10.
  • Network Automatic → Automatically detect changes in network connectivity and availability and reconfigure networking to stay connected.
  • Socket Enhancements → A non-stream architecture. This improves performance and simplifies the developer interface for adding new socket types. See what is new.
  • Link Protection → To grant exclusive access of a physical link or a virtual network interface cards (vnic) to a guest virtual machine (VM). See security.
  • Bridging → Connect together separate L2 subnetworks, allowing communication between attached nodes as if only a single subnetwork were in use.

  • Load Balancing → Solaris now includes an integrated L3/L4 load balancer.
  • IP Tunneling → IP interfaces can be plumbed and managed through `dladm`

Support Repository Updates (Solaris 11 Software)

Solaris software is published as Support Repository Updates (SRU). Oracle Support explains the purpose of the Support Repository in Doc 1021281.1. SRU are not free. SRUs are available to customers who have valid support contracts only.

Accessing Support Repositories: To access a Support Repository, you are required to have a Customer Support Identifier (CSI) with an appropriate Support Level for the Support Repository, associated with your account, in order for the proper list of products and repositories to be displayed by the Oracle Certificate Request site when you go to generate your certificate.

To access the Oracle Solaris 11 Support Repository, a Support Level of Operating System is required.  You should ensure a CSI, which provides this Support Level, is associated with your account.

Obtain your certificate: In order to access support repositories you must configure your product installation with the certificate/key for the repository you need to access.

To generate and download the certificate go to the Certificate Request website. You will be presented with a list of product repositories:
  1. Select the support repository you would like to generate a certificate for (for example; "Oracle Solaris 11 Support"), and click Submit.
  2. Type in an optional comment; click Submit.
  3. Download the certificate and key and follow the detailed instructions provided.
If you do not see the product support repository you wish to access, there is an issue with the product entitlements associated with your My Oracle Support account.  To access the Oracle Solaris 11 Support Repository, a Support Level of Operating System is required.  For more information on Support Levels, see How Patches and Updates Entitlement Works.
