Day 3, Technical Systems Ambassadors
By marchamilton on Sep 15, 2004
Much like a Survivor episode, the technical system ambassadors start off day 3 of our 5 day symposium. Unlike your typical sales meeting or training class, everyone is on time for the 8:15 am start, despite a late night spent in Andy Bechtolsheim's lab in the old Keila offices in the Palo Alto foothills. Everyone is still totally blown away by what they saw last night. Its really good to have Andy back at Sun! However, as even the engineers at Sun know these days, having the coolest technology on the planet isn't enough these days, you have to have innovative and creative business plans as well.
I'm a firm believer that the most innovative thinking comes from those who are closest to the customers. Sun has plenty of marketing campaigns around our new Sun Java Workstations, some of them even coming from my Edu team. The favorite, however, came from one of our ambassadors, Barton (I'll just use first names). Barton's idea was to give every technical system ambasador a Sun Java Workstation and let the ambassadors go at it and create their own mini sales campaigns. Well, we didn't quite get the funding to give all ambassadors a workstation, but we did get 24 systems and it is my job to pick the lucky ambassadors who get a workstation based on their proposals. I'll be announcing the "winners" on my blog later this week (shameless plug to drive my hit counter). I'll also be listing some of the success stories here as we progress on this innovative sales program.
