How to increase your browsers market share

So this is Microsoft's way to increase IE8 market share.

Just promise to people that they can win a fair amount of money - but only when using their most current, proprietary web browser. Oh - did I already say that this browser would only be available for their proprietary operating system?

Hardware vendors often write something like "works best with Windows XP Professional" - will we now see web sites with "works best only with Internet Explorer 8"? Is there an IE8 logo program in place?

Traffic in Beijing

Seems I must revise what I wrote about the traffic here a few days ago - traffic is still very heavy, seems I just watched it the wrong times or places when thinking it would be better nowadays.

Today we have been on a tourists tour with around 100 participants from OOoCon, and the ride within the city took very long.

We have been to different placces, including the Great Wall. There we had the "pleasure" to have the first snow of this year...

Who is Malte?

OK, after seeing somebody linking to my blog with the words a post by (apparently; I don't know the guy personally) a Sun employee working on OpenOffice", I think it's time to introduce myself ;)

I started working for StarDivision in 1991.
It was a small German software company that developed StarOffice.
The company was acquired by Sun Microsystems in 1999, and Sun made the product open source as OpenOffice.org in July 2000.

The development of StarWriter for Windows, OS/2, Mac and Motif started in 1990.
For achieving this, we have also developed our own multi platform GUI toolkit “StarView”.
More modules like Calc and Impress joined the office suite starting with 1994.

As you can see, I am working on that project more or less right from the beginning.

In the last 15 years I have worked on a lot of different areas in StarOffice.
The bigger ones include the EditEngine, the Online Help System, Accessibility and Digital Signatures.
It would be too much to list all the details in this blog entry, so if you are really interested, you can find more information here.

Today, I work as a Technical Architect for Sun's StarOffice/OpenOffice.org Engineering Team in Hamburg.
My main focus is on Accessibility, Security, Performance and Architecture.

I'm also a member of the OASIS OpenDocument Accessibility Subcommittee.

Malte starts blogging...

I thought about starting to blog for some time now, but I never got it started.

There was the time when all the discussions about OASIS OpenDocument Format and Accessibility arised.
I again considered start blogging that time, because I am responsible for StarOffice Accessibility, but I didn't...

Now that all the news about a proof-of-concept virus for OpenOffice.org arise, I feel that I really should start now, because I am also responsible for StarOffice Security.

So that's the beginning of Malte's Blog.

I don't like to read long blog entries myself, so I promise I will try to keep my blog entries short... ;)
