Sun's awe-inspiring students

It seems as if nearly every day at work I am amazed at and by the bright students involved with Sun as either Campus Ambassadors, or as proponents of open-source technology in OSUM.

Denis Magda is one fine example of such a student -- check out this blog post and I think you'll be just as impressed as I am, and will likely agree he has quite a bright future ahead of him!

Not that I am (really) old, but it makes me feel good just to think that some of these students who are so young and have so much going for really do have the world at their fingertips.

If you have any doubt, listen to Lin Lee talk with three Campus Ambassadors at JavaOne.  Their enthusiasm for open-source technology is contagious!

And thanks to Sun for continuing to support the student community.

OSUM is about more than just software

Today I saw a blog post in OSUM (Open Source University Meetup) that was really refreshing.  It was about a group of students from the Morehouse College OSUM group that volunteered at a soup kitchen this past weekend.

I thought it was exciting to see that students who came together through their shared interests in Sun products and subsequent OSUM group had chosen to selflessly give back to the community. It was very much in the Sun spirit of giving back to the community.  You can get more details about the event below, and link directly to Micah's blog.

Micah Streiff, Campus Ambassador and member of the Morehouse College OSUM, reports that group members volunteered their time on Saturday at the Saint Francis’ Table downtown at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Church in Atlanta.  St. Francis’ Table is a soup kitchen that helps the poor, hungry, and homeless.

The Morehouse College OSUM group served a meal at the soup kitchen, and Micah says there were hundreds that came by.  He reports that student volunteers kept glasses full, served soup, coffee, and bread and helped distribute toiletries and personal products.

Micah said the group of volunteers was diverse, but each came to “serve those in need.”

Please join me in applauding the members of the Morehouse College OSUM!
