[TIP] Import of Settings - what and when
By lukas on Apr 27, 2005
NetBeans offers you import of setting only beetwen major stable releases - it means from NetBeans 4.0 to NetBeans 4.1 The import of settings between RCs and Beta(s) isn't supported. It means that if you used NB 4.0 Beta and installed NetBeans 4.1 FCS it won't import the settings for you - at least it doesn't look for userdir from these releases.
Users still have workaround how to import their settings from such release. Default userdir is stored in your home directory (usually c:\\Documents and Settings\\[user_name] on Windows and /home/[user_name] on linux) in directory ".netbeans". The name of userdir differs release to release - '4.0', '3.6', '4.0rc', '4.0beta', etc. I think that the schema is obvious.
How to import your settings
If you want to import setting from beta, rc you have two choices.
- re-use the same directory - use command line switch '--userdir', e.g. netbeans --userdir [beta-userdir]
the IDE will use this directory and imports(reuse) the settings.
- copy the old userdir to the new one - e.g. copy beta userdir '4.1beta' to new '4.1rc'
NOTE: both these workaround are not supported!
