[TIP] Import of Settings - what and when

This is reaction on comment.

NetBeans offers you import of setting only beetwen major stable releases - it means from NetBeans 4.0 to NetBeans 4.1 The import of settings between RCs and Beta(s) isn't supported. It means that if you used NB 4.0 Beta and installed NetBeans 4.1 FCS it won't import the settings for you - at least it doesn't look for userdir from these releases.
Users still have workaround how to import their settings from such release. Default userdir is stored in your home directory (usually c:\\Documents and Settings\\[user_name] on Windows and /home/[user_name] on linux) in directory ".netbeans". The name of userdir differs release to release - '4.0', '3.6', '4.0rc', '4.0beta', etc. I think that the schema is obvious.

How to import your settings
If you want to import setting from beta, rc you have two choices.
  • re-use the same directory - use command line switch '--userdir', e.g. netbeans --userdir [beta-userdir]
the IDE will use this directory and imports(reuse) the settings.
  • copy the old userdir to the new one - e.g. copy beta userdir '4.1beta' to new '4.1rc'

NOTE: both these workaround are not supported!
Comments:

These workaround are still some brittle currently. Many time I did this, when switching between middle builds- daily build, beta or rc, the debuger, settings or RequestProcess(Exception, not remember exactly) are somehow failure or appeared.

Help from the user list, 'please simply drop the former home directory and restart.' And it worked

This problem surely deserves more consideration.

The same concern to Reset the update modules, namely, I alway fiddled with the existed and updated modules in Setup Wizard and there was no way to back when I relized I must to reset to the initilized status.
Again, simply drop the former home directory and restart. And when you wanted to recove the updated modules, aha, go to update centers please!
what a waste time is!

Thank you for trying the daily builds.
There are some changes during development cycle that it's hard to be backward compatible. NB provides import for users using final releases. IMO - the daily builds' users are considered to by 'experienced enought' to import userdir by themselfs.
Maybe the approach should be changed. You are always welcomed to file enhancement to issuezilla.
