Is it leagal to show images from different site

I'd like to know if it's legal when I insert/link an image from different site to my post. I did it only a few times (like the logos of GO and YOYO contest etc.) but I'll stop and remove all images that were not created by me if it's illegal :( I usually create link to the origin picture location from the image but it doesn't have to be enought. I don't pretend that it is picture created by me and I don't steal the images.

Does anybody know if it's legal? I'd like to know because I don't want to break a law.

We discussed it yesterday during lunch time but we didn't agree what's the right behaviour...

Comments:

I've been blatantly stealing images and using them on my site. I know I shouldn't but I figure until someone tells me explicitly to stop, I won't. It's not like I'm selling them or anything...

Do you mean stealing - like download from a site, upload to yours and then publish and the src in img tag points to your site?

I do not "steal" in this way. I only show an image from different location in my page. Src still point to origin image and it's usually noticed that it isn't my image or linked to the origin site.
I think that almost everybody is doing that...

I don't know about the legalities. Some sites, Mozilla comes to mind, post trademark usage guidance info for their logos. Perhaps go or yoyo have similar information available.

However, I would note that you are published on a relatively high profile site and some consider it rude to link directly to files within a site. There have been times that people have realized that the traffic for an image was coming from elsewhere and swapped in a very different image for the external linker's readership.

PJ has a treatment of this issue on groklaw: http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20050722013820636

Just because a link is in img format instead of text does not make it more than it is, a LINK, if links are illegal, then the whole internet is illegal. If the person to where the image points complains because of traffic concerns then it is of nice tone to stop using the image, and ask for a local copy or replace it with a text link. But it sure as hell is not illegal to do so. Just my 2cents

Thanks for all opinions.
I'll try to do something with that. I will :
  • take care about image licencing carefully and notice an author
  • do not link BIG images to my pages
  • use images only when it's worth to do it
Does it make sense? I think that I do most of that all the time, I'll try be more carefull ;)

2 DanielMD - I agree, links are legal ;) :)))
