Download 5.0 NOW

It was really tough week. All the testing is finished finally. I should celebrate but I'm in bed with my flu. Ooops, I almost forget - there is NetBeans 5.0, Mobility Pack 5.0 and Profiler waiting for your download.

What's new in NetBeans Mobility Pack 5.0
You can read my previous post about new features in Mobility Pack for complex overview. I'll just quickly name the improvements in 5.0.

Visual Mobile Designer helps you to create you application in easy graphic way - RAD. You can design all the screens, add components and commands in Screen Design view. And then you'll define flow between this screens in Flow Design. You know VMD from 4.1 but it's better now :) There are three new custom components in palette You can redesign layout of the screens and transitions. The one guarded block was splitted.

The support for connecting to server side data either throught JSR172 or our binary protocol has improved as well. Two wizards will help you to generate the client side for your midlets. It generates even Sample midlet to introduce you the functionality.

The preprocessor syntax changed to be more readable. Now it supports inner blocks, complicated condition, value checks etc. Preprocessor is able to understand the "old syntax" from 4.1, 4.0 So you don't have to worry that the 4.1 projects will not run in 5.0. We offer you conversion to the new syntax in one click. You can use project created in Antenna or J2ME polish in NetBeans now. I don't even talk about code completion that makes creation of preprocesor much more easier.

The Java Platform Emulator finds all your installed SDKs with emulators. If not point it to the install directory and it has to work... (if not then the emulator SDK isn't UEI compliant or the installation is broken). You can easily download emulators with Update Center.

If you are intersted in history and evolution of the features look at this page. You'll definitelly find some usefull TIPs in my TIP category, in FAQs or in tutorials. Be prepared for more tutorials - the list is really huge.

There is nice presentation about NetBeans 5.0 on JavaLobby. Roumen is talking about Beta in this presentation but the features remain still the same in final 5.0 ... only the bugs were fixed ;)
Comments:

any chance of having a proper mobility pack installer for mac without emulator? or at least a compressed archive in zip or tar.gz format instead of the installshield package that cannot be tricked into starting on the mac in any way?

As I said in comments on javachaos The answer is still the same - mobility pack doesn’t consider Mac platform really interesting yet. It’s not worth the effort. All the major vendors are building SDKs with emulator mostly for windows and sometimes for linux. There is only mpowerplyer available on Mac, AFAIK. From my QE point of view it’d mean to test another platform for a few users. I’m really sorry to say that. I would expect a different solution. When the mobility pack will be opensourced we will provide zip distribution. Mac still won’t be supported platform but there will be an easy way how to use it on Mac. Anyway, you still have choce to convince me(and rest of the team) that there is lot of users that would like to see the mobility pack on Mac - vote for http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=53076

5.0 is out of the door. It can change into next release but it's up to you...
