Sun and Community Investment

To all my loyal followers (also known as Nick (my brother) and Bernice (my sister)) ;-),
I will be OOO (Out Of the Office) for the next two days. Where will I be, you ask? I'm taking a course on how to facilitate elementary-aged reading groups (AKA Junior Great Books) as part of my volunteer librarian job at the local elementary school.
This is my second year of volunteering at the school library. I'm pretty happy to work at a company that is such a strong supporter of community involvement. The school I volunteer at is located in a city surrounded by farms. This coupled with the fact that it's public (publically funded) puts it in a somewhat vulnerable position of having many unmet needs...such as not enough help, funding, equipment, books, etc. Therefore, community involvement makes a huge difference... a book drive by Sun employees last year helped net over 1,000 books for the libarary.
During the school year, I flex my schedule to allow me to spend a couple hours most Fridays in the library. Tasks include checking books in/out, assisting students (occassionally reprimanding them for being too loud in the library...that's kind of fun), getting new or donated books into circulation (I'm estimating that before a book hits the shelf there is ~30 minutes of work to laminate the book, label the book w/ the call # and scan bar, and enter the book in the library computer system).
I'm looking forward to my new role of reading group facilitator this year and will keep you posted on the progress!
