Lug Nut Talk...

lugnuts ...I got a surprising lesson in lug nuts last week.

I was driving my car that was engineered for the Autobahn as tho' I was on the Autobahn, but I was actually on a dirt road. For some unknown reason, the nice people who maintain this particular dirt road occasionally cover it with 3/4" rock. This shredded one of my tires. OK, maybe it just caused a puncture and my proceeding to drive on it for a mile or two because I didn't realize I had a flat was the real cause behind the shredding.

Anyway, I find a nice patch of pavement to park on and dial the nice man (AKA Tire Changing Specialist (TCS)) that married me so we can enjoy the team building experience behind changing a tire. While I'm waiting, I start doing what any good project manager would do...I begin preparing the scene so when the TCS gets on the scene, he could execute like crazy.

While he's changing the tire, I notice an extra set of lug nuts in the trunk and share my finding with my TCS. We both agree that they are just extras. He tightens the last lug nut, then I'm on my way! Not exactly. Instead of rolling, the tire is locked in place and just leaves a long skid mark as I attempt to drive off.

Turns out the full size spare has it's own special, much shorter lug nuts than the original tires lug nuts. I'd consider this a design flaw, especially since the full sized lug nuts screwed in as though they were compatible with the spare, but I'm sure those German engineers know what they're doing.

Photo side note: At the time the photo was taken, my TCS got mad at me for snapping pictures for my blog during the heat of the tire changing battle, so I hope this bit of information benefits someone out there.
