Colorado Springs Tour

Thanks much to Spencer Penrose, Colorado Springs Philanthropist during the early 1900's, we enjoyed a fantastic weekend with our 12 year old and visiting neice and nephew (both 6). Despite being a Colorado native, I finally realized over the weekend what a gem the Colorado Springs area is -- so many fun and educational sites to see in such a small proximity. It took a bit of planning, but here's what we managed to see in 48 hours:

Ghost Town Museum: Original buildings from the late 1800's and early 1900's have been presevered and authentically furnished. The kids enjoyed learning to pan for gold.

Manitou Cliff Dwellings: You can actually meander through every room of the dwellings.

Mollie Kathleeen Gold Mine: By far, my favorite part of the weekend. It's the only mine in the US where they allow tours 1,000 feet below ground. The elevator shaft is about 3'x3'. To be honest, I was amazed the tour is legal -- the mine is still functioning in the winter months for research purposes, so you get to see lots of cool demos of the mining equipment in action.

Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo: Compliments of Spencer Penrose. The best giraffe exhibit you'll ever see. You can purchase crackers at the exhibit and hand feed the giraffes. An amazing experience.

Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun: The final resting place of Spencer Penrose. Shrine entrance fees are part of the Zoo fees -- you drive through the zoo to reach the shrine. You can walk through the entire shrine -- breathtaking views from all of the balconies.

Seven Falls: Check out the stairs of death to the left of the falls. I made it to the half way point, then chickened out.

US Air Force Academy: We enjoy going to USAF football games in the winter, but it's a beautiful place to visit in the warm summer months as well when everything is green. The triangular shaped building is the chapel.
