"This paper describes Oracle Linux 7 features that help IT organizations deploy strategic applications effectively and efficiently. It discusses the advantages of choosing Oracle Linux and how the operating system brings value to enterprise application delivery. It also explores versatile technologies that are supported with Oracle Linux (such as Linux Containers, Docker, Oracle VM, and OpenStack) that allow IT architects to choose how best to deploy and meet requirements for agile cloud and virtualized application environments."

"Evaluator Group studied the creation and use of virtualized server templates as an administrative process for server deployments in an Oracle RAC environment—a process that can be surprisingly complex if done manually within any database environment.
This study was done in two ways:
• Evaluator Group conducted an independent lab comparison of template creation methods in an Oracle database application environment. We first built templates 'from scratch' and deployed virtualized servers for Oracle RAC under VMware while tracking the time consumed for each step in the process. We then repeated the same process of deploying virtualized Oracle RAC servers, but in this second iteration we used Oracle Virtual Machine (Oracle VM) and the templates that are included with Oracle VM to create clones of virtual machines. Again, we tracked the time consumed for each step in this process.
• We also interviewed an Oracle systems administrator as a basis for additional comparison of building templates in a production environment. For this customer, templates were a “game changer” because of an ability to deploy database and business intelligence services up to twenty times faster for their customers.
Evaluator Group conducted this study of both methods to compare the two on the basis of management complexity, risk resulting from administrative error, and overall time consumed."
One of the really cool things in this paper is some real world data from a customer using Oracle VM and Oracle Linux and the total cost of ownership reductions they were able to achieve. Have a read of the full paper.
If you’re headed to the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for Collaborate 15 in a couple of weeks, you’ll be able to learn a lot about Oracle Linux and Oracle VM. We will have a demo pod in Oracle’s demo area (booth #955) where you can talk to our experts and get your questions answered. The demo area is open Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the show.
Also, be sure to attend our "Oracle Linux and Oracle VM Strategy, Update, and Roadmap” session at 4:30PM on Monday, April 13 in South Seas A. The conversation will include information on OpenStack, Docker, and other exciting things relating to Oracle Linux and Oracle VM.
A new Oracle press release this morning highlights the use of Oracle Linux and Oracle VM at Epsilon. From the press release:
"With Oracle VM and Oracle Linux, Epsilon has significantly accelerated its service delivery while improving the resiliency of its infrastructure and reducing total cost of ownership. Epsilon can now rapidly provision high-performance, location-independent, elastic, and production-ready database and business intelligence environments for its customers—delivering these solutions up to 20 times faster than before."
I know we're here on the Oracle Linux blog, but we know a lot of our users are also using Oracle VM. The Oracle VM product management team has put together a very short (just a few minutes) survey that would really help them get some feedback on how people are using it in their environments.
The Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database provides a framework that fully automates the creation of a Single Instance, Oracle Restart (Single Instance/HA) or Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) configurations in an Oracle VM environment. In a matter of minutes the versatile and powerful Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database can be cloned into any number of VMs which could be deployed as a Single Instance, Oracle Restart (Single Instance/HA) or Oracle RAC of any number of nodes.
Of course, this is the Oracle Linux blog, so why am I referencing new Oracle VM Templates? Because these templates of course run Oracle Linux! Here are the highlights of the new templates:
NEW in 2015 Templates:
Yum@Deploy support(11gR2 & 12c) - Allows running yum install/update during first boot/deployment and subsequent re-builds.
Multi-Diskgroup support for Oracle ASM
Support for multiplexed Controlfile & REDO logfiles
Default kernel boot is Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK3) 3.8.13-55, seamless transition to HVM mode
In November, Oracle ran several live online events called the "Virtual Technology Summit" which are now available for on-demand viewing. The events had four tracks, Database, Java, Middleware, and Systems. In the Systems track, you'll find a number of sessions interesting for users of Oracle Linux, focused on OpenStack and Oracle VM.
If you'd like to check these sessions out, go register yourself here and have a look.
Since it's Thanksgiving week in the USA we're doing our Friday spotlight early this week.

As technology evolves, the complexity of securing our dynamic IT environment has changed, where the threats are no longer just access-based but now content-based. As such, there’s a requirement for intelligent software controlled security coupled with identity-based policy enforcement of all content. That’s where Fortinet comes in, with its network security appliances – appliances that provide an extensive array of functionality an organization needs to detect threat prevention within legitimate content, even from trusted sources and authorized applications.
Fortigate has been certified to work with Oracle VM. Drop by Fortigate’s kiosk at the Oracle Linux and Virtualization Showcase, with Oracle OpenStack at Oracle OpenWorld to learn more about Security solutions for your network.
Want to know how to implement security in an increasingly dynamic world? Be sure to join Fortinet’s leading technical security expert, Ken McAlpine, VP of Network Security Solutions at the Scene and Be Heard Theater (#313) for a 20 minute session.

Fusion-io, now a SanDisk company, introduces support for Oracle VM
Fusion ioMemory has long history helping customers accelerate Oracle Linux environments. With its latest release of Virtual Storage Layer for Fusion ioMemory products, SanDisk now offers full support for Oracle VM expanding the ways that customers can take advantage of the combination of Oracle virtualization and Fusion ioMemory flash.
The new Fusion ioMemory Atomic Series provides premium performance for server-side PCIe application acceleration. The Atomic Series delivers the industry’s highest capacity flash in a PCIe form factor with up to 6.4TB per card. Improved error checking and correction technologies further add value for the most demanding enterprise customers.
Server-side Fusion ioMemory accelerates database applications placing data closer to the CPU and system memory resources for outstanding performance results. . This also allows customers to cache data on the server to accelerate application performance and dramatically reduces the load on Storage Area Networks (SANs). This also eliminates the I/O bottlenecks associated with highly virtualized servers while scaling up VM performance and density to increase the number of VMs that can efficiently run on a server.
Be sure to stop by the SanDisk kiosk (SLX-020) at the Oracle Linux and Virtualization Showcase and visit SanDisk booth #1429 at Oracle OpenWorld to learn more about how Fusion ioMemory and the full range of SanDisk Enterprise offering for Oracle applications. SanDisk will also be hosting two Speaking Sessions:
“Accelerate Revenue and Reduce TCO with SanDisk Shared Flash”, presented by Jody Kirk, Director Product Management. Monday 9/29 at 2:30pm - 2:50pm, at Moscone South at the Scene and Be Heard Theatre (#313)
“Eliminating Transaction Latency in MySQL”, Conference Session, presented by Nisha Talagala, Fellow. Tuesday, 9/30 at 10:45am – 11:30am, at Moscone South #262.
