FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT: Re-cap of OpenWorld 2015 for Oracle Linux, Virtualization and OpenStack for Oracle Linux

Hello everyone, what a week it had been, we have wrapped up another Oracle Openworld!

Thank you to all our partners, customers, speakers, demo staff and organizers for making this Oracle OpenWorld a special one. For those curious about the statistics this year, I wanted to share those fascinating numbers  (see infographic attached).

Oracle OpenWorld 2015 turned out to be an amazing one for our teams. We would like to recap and summarize our announcements and activities.

Highlights from the Keynotes:

Oracle Linux was center stage in this year's keynotes. Friday night, we had Intel CEO talking about how Oracle Linux and displaying it on the stage. One of the biggest announcements at the show is the new userspace patching capability of Ksplice, unveiled in Larry Ellison’s The Secure Cloud keynote . Ksplice is included with Oracle Linux Premier Support and administrators have been using it to patch the running Linux kernel with zero-downtime and without rebooting for years, with over 1 million patches distributed. But patching kernel vulnerabilities is only part of the security story, because vulnerabilities can also occur in system libraries like glibc and OpenSSL. In 2014, The Heartbleed Bug exploited a vulnerability in OpenSSL and cost organizations millions of dollars. With the userspace patching feature of Ksplice, vulnerabilities like this can be corrected immediately when the patch is available without downtime or rebooting, dramatically improving the security of your systems.

Watch the keynotes on-demand if you have not had a chance to tune in during OpenWorld.

From theCube :

Wim Coekaerts, SVP of Linux and Virtualization Engineering discussed the updates to Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux and Open source at Oracle with SiliconANGLE Media team at theCube, at Oracle OpenWorld 2015 in San Francisco. My favorite part was about his comments on open-source. He explained Open source at Oracle is a “development strategy, not a philosophical approach.” If it makes business sense to develop the product as open source, that’s how it moves forward. Open source is not just in my department,” Coekaerts explained, "but rather across the company". This was a great video interview with Wim Coekaerts, not to be missed!

Highlights from the Showcase and Exhibition Hall:

Our Oracle Linux, Oracle VM and OpenStack Showcase area was a big hit with the Oracle OpenWorld attendees this year. Our partners amitego AG, Intel, Huawei, Fortinet, SGI, Qlogic, Niksun and Linux Foundation showcased their solutions and presented in the theatre. We also had great interaction with attendees at our Oracle demo pods fe,aturing Oracle Linux, Oracle VMOracle VM VirtualBox, Oracle Secure Global Desktop and Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux products. Our theatre sessions were so busy that we had to bring extra seating.

Highlights from our sessions:

Our sessions were amazing, everyone that attended came out with positive remarks, one attendee tweeted at Greg Marsden's session : "Nice session 'Maximize Oracle Linux Performance on Servers and in the Cloud'  Tuning OS, Memory, FS. Can't wait to try them. #oow15 ".  There were few "wow!" and "really?" remarks in Wim Coekaerts' general session when audience heard that Oracle VM VirtualBox supports almost all the OS in the market including IBM OS/2 (looks like some of our banking customers still using it for custom applications).

Key takeaways:

  • Security is critical in today's ever-present cyber attacks and we have the solution for your Linux environment: new userspace patching and existing kernel patching capability of Ksplice makes it the must have item
  • If you are running on Oracle Engineered Systems, or Oracle Public Cloud, you are already running on Oracle Linux and Oracle VM. Why not implement it elsewhere in your infrastructure.
  • We have announced Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux R2- that simplifies deployment and administration by leveraging docker-based containers for deployment and upgrades
  • Oracle Linux and Oracle VM is certified and supported by all the major partners

I would like to end with an article that sums it all: Larry Ellison's World View: 7 Observations Straight From The Hip

See you all at the next  Oracle OpenWorld, September 18-22, 2016.

Friday Spotlight: Start Reserving Your Spots in Oracle OpenWorld 2015 Sessions

Happy Friday!

With Oracle OpenWorld 2015 a little over a month away, it's time to start figuring out which sessions you're going to attend! You can start putting your schedule together today with My Schedule (if you're an OpenWorld veteran, this was called "Schedule Builder" in previous years). And of course, we hope you join us in several of our sessions and hands on labs about Oracle Linux, Oracle VM, and Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux.

To make it a little easier to find content that is interesting to you, we have two "Focus On" documents that you can have a look at and bookmark. The Focus On docs format really nicely on mobile devices, and are updated in real-time in case rooms change or anything else unforeseen happens, so they are a great resource to have bookmarked on your phone.

Since Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux spans both Oracle Linux and Oracle virtualization, you'll find those sessions in both.

We'll go into more detail in the coming weeks, but I'd like to highlight a couple of sessions to start with. Even if you can't join us in any other sessions, I highly recommend signing up for the General Sessions from Senior Vice President Linux and Virtualization Wim Coekaerts. These are always our most popular sessions, and it's a fantastic opportunity to get the very latest information on industry trends and the direction of Oracle's Linux and virtualization teams.

Friday Spotlight: Building the Modern Cloud-Enabled Data Center

Happy Friday!

Thanks so much to everyone that stopped by our booth and went to our sessions at LinuxCon North America 2015! We had a great time and it was fantastic getting the opportunity to meet and speak with many of you in person.

Some of the things that are top of mind for Linux users are (obviously!) the cloud impact on data center design, container technologies, OpenStack, security, and so on. So I looked through our archive to find a webcast that I think does a great job outlining how Oracle Linux approaches these things. If you're looking for a brief overview this Friday afternoon, head on over to this webcast archive and have a watch:

Friday Spotlight: Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.0 is out!

Happy Friday!

I know a lot of folks use Oracle VM VirtualBox to run Oracle Linux VMs. I do this myself every day. The ability to run multiple machines with different operating systems on a laptop is incredibly helpful. For example, you can do Docker development in Oracle Linux on your Macbook. Or if you're running Linux as your main OS, you could have a Windows VM, maybe for some pesky corporate apps that won't run on Linux. The possibilities are just endless.

Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.0 was released this week, with a number of key features. Things like:

  • Runtime disk encryption
  • Drag and drop between nearly all host and guest combinations (including my typical Mac host->Oracle Linux guest setup)
  • USB 3.0 support
  • Headless launch support (say you need a local server VM running in the background!)
  • Performance improvements with paravirtualization for newer Linux and Windows guests

And a lot more.

Have a look at the Oracle Virtualization blog post for more details, and go grab Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.0 here.

Have a great week!

Friday Spotlight: Shiny new pages for OSS, Public Yum, and ULN!

Happy Friday and a happy holiday weekend to those of you in the US!

It might be obvious, but the Oracle Linux and virtualization teams are heavily involved in open source. For quite some time, we’ve had a site that describes the open source projects the teams are involved in. This site was just updated with a new look and feel and additional content. My favorite part is a history section going by to 2001. Check it out:

I’m also excited to highlight the new look and feel for the Oracle Linux Yum server (we also call it "Public Yum"):

And you also might not yet have noticed that the Unbreakable Linux Network ALSO has a shiny new look and feel:

Just some improvements to make working with these sites easier for folks. We hope you enjoy them!

Friday Spotlight: Optimizing Oracle Database Performance on Oracle Linux with Flash

Happy Friday!

This week, I'm dipping into the archives for a really interesting white paper, "Optimizing Oracle Database Performance on Oracle Linux with Flash." It talks about one of my favorite benefits of running Oracle Linux or Oracle Solaris with Oracle database called Database Smart Flash Cache. From the summary of the paper:

"This document explains how to increase Oracle database performance and improve user response time by deploying Oracle’s Flash Accelerator hardware with Oracle’s Database Smart Flash Cache feature. Oracle’s Database Smart Flash Cache feature is supported only on Oracle Linux and Oracle Solaris operating systems beginning with Oracle 11gR2.

The benefits outlined here apply to all Oracle Flash products on Oracle Linux or Oracle Solaris. For this particular study Oracle’s PCIe based in-server Sun Flash Accelerator F40 PCIe Card and Oracle Linux with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel were used. The findings apply to both the Sun Flash Accelerator F40 and F80 PCIe Cards."

You can read the full paper here.

I also wanted to give a reminder for our webcast next week on Docker. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn not only how to get your feet wet with Docker and Oracle Linux, but you'll also learn the sorts of use cases where Docker really shines from one of our top experts, Avi Miller.
