Red Hat Summit 2014

Today is the first day of Red Hat Summit 2014 in San Francisco and Oracle Linux is there! If you're at the show over the next few days, be sure to stop by the booth and talk to our experts.

Oracle: Booth 822
Monday: 5pm - 6:30pm
Tuesday: 10am - 2pm, 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Wednesday: 10am - 2pm

One of the things our folks are talking about is zero-downtime updates with Ksplice. Helping users keep their systems up to date and diagnosing issues without scheduling downtime, there have been over 1 million Ksplice production patches issues since 2007. And if you are a RHEL user, you can get a free 30 day trial to try out dynamic kernel updates on RHEL right now. No reinstall required, just try Ksplice on a RHEL system for 30 days by filling out this form:

Free 30 day trial of Ksplice for RHEL users

If you're new to Ksplice, here is a quick overview video:

If you're at the show, please stop by and chat and we hope you enjoy the beautiful city of San Francisco!

Friday Spotlight: COLLABORATE14

Happy Friday!

If you’re an Oracle customer, you’re probably familiar with the yearly COLLABORATE conference put on by the IOUG, OAUG, and Quest user groups. It’s a fantastic conference where lots of real world Oracle use cases are discussed, and this year's show is happening next week in Las Vegas.

If you’re going to the show, be sure to check out the Oracle Linux and Oracle VM content there. First, there is an Oracle Linux / Oracle VM booth in the demo area, where you can talk to some knowledgable folks. If you have questions on using Oracle Linux or Oracle VM in your environment, this is the place to go!

Second, there are two sessions that will be very interesting for you:

998: Oracle Linux—State of the Penguin
Date: Tuesday, April 8
Time: 4:15 PM
Location: Level 3, San Polo 3501A

997: Oracle Virtualization Strategy and Roadmap
Date: Tuesday, April 8
Time: 5:30 PM
Location: Level 3, San Polo 3501A

Also, there are several sessions related to Oracle Linux and Oracle VM that aren’t being done by our team, but would still be valuable for you. In the agenda tool, search for “Linux", "Oracle Linux", “Virtualization", and "Oracle VM”.

If you’re going to the show, we hope to see you there!

Friday Spotlight: Tips for Hardening an Oracle Linux Server

Happy Friday!

One of the things I like about our Friday Spotlight is not only do we talk about new things, it also gives us an opportunity to highlight older material that is still valuable. That's the case with this week's spotlight, which is about an article from 2012 that covers tips for hardening an Oracle Linux server. If you've come to Oracle Linux in the last couple of years, you might not have seen this, and it's just as a relevant today as it was then.

This in-depth article covers minimizing active services, locking down network services, managing users and authentication, and much more. If you're a Linux administrator, you might want to consider adding this article to your Reading List, saving to Pocket or Evernote, or whatever mechanism you use to hold on to good resources.

Friday Spotlight: Accelerating MySQL on Oracle Linux with Flash

Happy Friday!

Our spotlight this week is on a brand new white paper that can help you get the most out of MySQL running on Oracle Linux, with the help of Oracle's Sun Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe card. To give you an idea of the Oracle Linux part of this, here is an except from the paper's intro:

"Oracle Linux with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) was chosen for this study for several key reasons including its upstream support for the latest hardware relevant to modern data center operations, and SSD support and performance features such as SSD detect. In addition, MySQL database workloads benefit from the platform’s deep integration with the solution stack, optimizations resulting from industry collaborations and enhancements in the UEK.

Friday Spotlight: Vitual Sysadmin Day and Hands On Labs

Happy Friday!

If you missed Virtual Sysadmin Day last month, it is available in replay mode. It's not quite the same as the real-time environment where you could ask questions, but you do get recorded versions of the presentations that were given to give you some extra context for working through the Hands On Labs. Also, if you are in EMEA friendly time zones, there is a second live Virtual Sysadmin Day coming up on March 18. You can register here.

Speaking of Hands On Labs, the ones from Virtual Sysadmin Day are hosted on a Wiki page here. But the really cool thing is there are several additional Hands On Labs there that you can work through, too. So, if you're in the mood to learn a lot more about Oracle Linux administration, have a look and see what interests you.

Have a great week!

Friday Spotlight: Ksplice SNMP Plugin

Happy Friday!

Over at our Ksplice Blog (which has one of my favorite taglines, "Rebooting is Obsolete"), Oracle's Tim Hill writes about the new SNMP plug-in for Ksplice, which allows the use of Oracle Enterprise Manager or other SNMP-compatible monitoring solution to monitor Ksplice instances. It's very cool stuff, we hope you check it out.

We'll see you next week!

Friday Spotlight: Virtual Sysadmin Day Winter 2014

Happy Friday! Our Friday Spotlight today is a bit unique in that we're putting the same information on both the Oracle Virtualization blog and the Oracle Linux blog. The reason is that we want to tell you about a fantastic opportunity for Oracle VM and Oracle Linux administrators.

On January 28, Oracle is hosting an event called Virtual Sysadmin Day. If you haven't attended one of these before, you're in for a treat. These events let you attend a virtual version of the hands on lab sessions that we run each year at Oracle OpenWorld. So, if you've ever wanted to go to one of those sessions but couldn't get to San Francisco or the other Oracle OpenWorld locations around the world, now is your chance to attend from the comfort of you desk!

The format is really cool. The materials for the lab are provided for you, you just need to have Oracle VM VirtualBox (it's a free download), and download the pre-configured virtual machines for the labs. You should do this ahead of the event, but all the information to help you do it is available to you when you register.

On the day of the event, you login and watch some intro content that sets up the labs, and then you follow the steps for the labs on you own system. Oracle experts will be in the chat area to help with issues you might run into.

Oracle Linux Friday Spotlight - December 6, 2013

Happy Friday!

By now, you've probably heard about the release of Oracle Linux 6.5. One really cool thing about this release is that Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 is installed by default, meaning you get to use all the great features of UEK R3 without needing to do a separate installation. And are there a lot of great features in UEK R3! So, our spotlight this week is on the release notes for the latest version of Oracle's Unbreakable Enteprise Kernel.

Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 release notes

You'll learn about Control Groups, Linux Containers, DTrace, additional crypto options, improved diagnostics, the updated btrfs, better memory management, more networking options, improvements for performance, security, storage, and much more.

See you next Friday!

Oracle Linux Friday Spotlight - November 8, 2013

Happy Friday, everyone!

This week, I want to highlight a really wonderful resource, the Oracle Linux Wiki on wikis.oracle.com. You can find a lot of in-depth technical information there and it’s probably worthy of a bookmark to check in on occasionally.

One of my favorite types of content on the wiki is the do it yourself hands on labs. We do these at in person events like Oracle OpenWorld and also online for our Virutal SysAdmin Days, and those are great because you can get real-time assistance if you have any questions. But, if you’re eager to learn more about Oracle Linux and don’t want to wait for one of those events, you can step through these labs in your own time. All of the information you need is on the wiki.

We’ll see you next week!
