End-to-end Data Protection Using Oracle Linux with the ETERNUS DX S3 series and Emulex HBA

As demand for data protection has grown in recent years, ensuring the integrity of the customer's data is a very important task. To carry out this task, data protection is not only required for the storage system but the entire system.

This White Paper from Fujitsu, an Oracle Diamond Partner, explains how data protection can be implemented for the entire system using T10 Protection Information (T10 PI) that comes with the Oracle Linux with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK), the ETERNUS DX S3 series, and Emulex HBA.

The T10 PI and DIX functions enable data protection for the entire system including data write processes from applications to disk drives. Data protection for the entire system can improve system reliability by protecting the system from damaged or inconsistent data to minimize downtime and reduce end-user maintenance cost.

Friday Spotlight: Oracle VM Templates Economic Impact Assessment

I wanted to bring your attention this week to a brand new paper called "Deploying Oracle RAC using Oracle VM Templates—An Economic Impact Assessment." In the paper, Evaluator Group took a look at Oracle VM Templates with Oracle RAC versus user-created VMware templates. From the paper:

"Evaluator Group studied the creation and use of virtualized server templates as an administrative process for server deployments in an Oracle RAC environment—a process that can be surprisingly complex if done manually within any database environment.

This study was done in two ways:

• Evaluator Group conducted an independent lab comparison of template creation methods in an Oracle database application environment. We first built templates 'from scratch' and deployed virtualized servers for Oracle RAC under VMware while tracking the time consumed for each step in the process. We then repeated the same process of deploying virtualized Oracle RAC servers, but in this second iteration we used Oracle Virtual Machine (Oracle VM) and the templates that are included with Oracle VM to create clones of virtual machines. Again, we tracked the time consumed for each step in this process.

• We also interviewed an Oracle systems administrator as a basis for additional comparison of building templates in a production environment. For this customer, templates were a “game changer” because of an ability to deploy database and business intelligence services up to twenty times faster for their customers.

Evaluator Group conducted this study of both methods to compare the two on the basis of management complexity, risk resulting from administrative error, and overall time consumed."

One of the really cool things in this paper is some real world data from a customer using Oracle VM and Oracle Linux and the total cost of ownership reductions they were able to achieve. Have a read of the full paper.

Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 5 Now Available

We are pleased to announce the availability of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 5 (UEKR3U5) for Oracle Linux 6 and Oracle Linux 7. This is the fifth quarterly update release for UEK Release 3 (Version 3.8.13-68) and includes driver updates and a consolidation of fixes for bugs and security issues.

Some notable highlights include:

  • The turbostat tool is now included with the kernel and can be used to provide information on processor topology and statistics, such as temperature and frequency.
  • Updates to the bonding driver to enable the ethtool command, which shows useful data like link aggregate speed and duplex mode.
  • The SHA-512 hash algorithm is now available for signing kernel modules during installation.
  • The ability to use swap files that reside on NFS shares is available as a technology preview.
  • Xen EFI support has been added.
  • Device driver updates (e.g. storage devices, network cards) from key partners, such as:
    • Broadcom
    • Cisco
    • Emulex
    • HP
    • Intel
    • Mellanox
    • Microsoft

Announcing General Availability of Oracle Linux 7.1

We're happy to announce the general availability of Oracle Linux 7 Update 1, the first update release for Oracle Linux 7. All packages are currently available on ULN and public yum; ISO installation images will be freely available for download from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud soon.

Oracle Linux 7 Update 1 ships with the following kernel packages:

  •     Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) Release 3 (kernel-uek-3.8.13-55.1.6.el7uek) for x86-64
  •     Red Hat Compatible Kernel (kernel-3.10.0-229.el7) for x86-64

Oracle Linux 7 update 1 provides the latest features and innovations, such as:

  • Linux container support using either Docker or LXC with UEK Release 3
  • Comprehensive dynamic tracing with DTrace and UEK Release 3
  • Production support for Btrfs with UEK Release 3
  • The latest 3rd party hardware support

Friday Spotlight: Oracle Linux and Database Smart Flash Cache

Happy Friday!

One of the coolest, yet perhaps not best known, features of running Oracle Database and Oracle Linux together is Database Smart Flash Cache. Wim Coekaerts put it this way on his blog earlier this week:

"Basically, if you have flash devices attached to your server, you can use this flash memory to increase the size of the buffer cache. So instead of aging blocks out of the buffer cache and having to go back to reading them from disk, they move to the much, much faster flash storage as a secondary fast buffer cache (for reads, not writes)."

So, this gives you a way to significantly increase performance on your systems running the Oracle Database and Oracle Linux. How cool is that? Wim then goes on to describe the few easy steps it takes to get it up and running.

Technology Preview available for the Oracle Linux software collection library

Today we are announcing a technology preview for the Oracle Linux software collection library.  The software collection library provides useful features to both developers and administrators, by providing access to later versions of packages and libraries commonly used in development, such as Perl, PHP and Python. 

Under the software collection library, these packages can be installed on existing systems, without overwriting the base packages delivered by the platform release.  The software collection library delivers the latest features and enhancements to many popular packages, which developers and administrators can easily integrate into their projects and solutions.  The Oracle Linux software collection library can be downloaded today from public-yum.  Please review the release notes for more information and send us your feedback and questions on the Oracle Linux forum.

Friday Spotlight: The Oracle Learning Library

You might have seen Antoinette O'Sullivan's post earlier this week about a new video for Ksplice. This video is part of the Oracle Learning Library, which is a tremendous resource for Oracle product information. There is a lot of content there on Oracle Linux, and if you're using other Oracle technologies, too, there is information on Oracle VM, Oracle Database, Oracle Cloud, Engineered Systems, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle Fusion Middleware, the list goes on and on. If you have not checked it out, I highly recommend heading over there for some Friday afternoon learning.

Friday Spotlight: New Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database

In last week's Oracle Virtualization Spotlight, Honglin Su discussed new Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database. Here's an excerpt:

The Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database provides a framework that fully automates the creation of a Single Instance, Oracle Restart (Single Instance/HA) or Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) configurations in an Oracle VM environment. In a matter of minutes the versatile and powerful Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database can be cloned into any number of VMs which could be deployed as a Single Instance, Oracle Restart (Single Instance/HA) or Oracle RAC of any number of nodes.

Of course, this is the Oracle Linux blog, so why am I referencing new Oracle VM Templates? Because these templates of course run Oracle Linux! Here are the highlights of the new templates:

NEW in 2015 Templates:

  • Yum@Deploy support(11gR2 & 12c) - Allows running yum install/update during first boot/deployment and subsequent re-builds.
  • Multi-Diskgroup support for Oracle ASM
  • Support for multiplexed Controlfile & REDO logfiles
  • Default kernel boot is Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK3) 3.8.13-55, seamless transition to HVM mode
