FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT: Best Videos about Oracle Linux from OOW15

There's something better about hearing a topic in a video, it is as if you have been transported to that location without interruptions from other elements. You also get to know the presenter at a different level; how he gets excited about his products, his projects or the environment around him. For this reason, we wanted to dedicate this Friday to all the Oracle OpenWorld videos that feature Oracle Linux.  It will give you an amazing insight and transport you to San Francisco, to that moment!


First we want to start with Oracle OpenWorld 2015  keynotes that have featured Oracle Linux announcements. We recommend watching Larry Ellison and Intel CEO, Brian Krzanich's keynotes.

FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT: Getting Started with Docker on Oracle Linux

Happy Friday everyone! 

We have a great technical article for you this Friday.  In this article, you learn how to customize a Docker container image and use it to instantiate application instances across different Linux servers. This article describes how to create a Dockerfile, how to allocate runtime resources to containers, and how to establish a communication channel between two containers (for example, between web server and database containers). 

Ginny Henningsen quotes "Docker is exciting because it can easily capture a full application environment into a virtual container that can be deployed across different Linux servers. System administrators and software developers are learning that Docker can help them deploy application images on Linux quickly, reliably, and consistently—without dependency and portability problems that can inject delays into planned deployment schedules. Docker containers can define an application and its dependencies using a small text file (a Dockerfile) that can be moved to different Linux releases and quickly rebuilt, simplifying application portability. In this way, "Dockerized" applications are easily migrated to different Linux servers where they can execute on bare metal, in a virtual machine, or on Linux instances in the cloud. "

As shown in Figure 1, Docker containers consume fewer resources than "heavyweight" hypervisor-based solutions. Hypervisor-based solutions host a full-blown operating system instance in each virtual machine guest, but this also allows them to support different operating systems. (Oracle VM, for example, can host Oracle Linux, Oracle Solaris, and Microsoft Windows in virtual machines.)

It is Friday and that means it is time for our Spotlight! 

Our spotlight today is the recently updated Oracle Linux FAQ. This is an excellent document that features some of the questions that everyone asks about Oracle Linux and Oracle Linux support. We cover variety of topics including general definitions, compatibility, support, pricing, indemnification, migration and many more.. 

Here's one of the questions as an example:

Q: What is DTrace for Oracle Linux?

A: DTrace is a comprehensive dynamic tracing framework that was initially developed for the Oracle Solaris operating system, and is now available to Oracle Linux customers. DTrace is designed to give operational insights that allow users to tune and troubleshoot the operating system. DTrace provides Oracle Linux developers with a tool to analyze performance, and increase observability into the systems they own to see how they work. DTrace enables higher quality applications development, reduced downtime, lower cost, and greater utilization of existing resources. It is available to download from ULN for Oracle Linux Support customers.

Are you planning on Migrating from SuSE Linux to Oracle Linux?

If you are planning to migrate your SUSE Linux to Oracle Linux, check out this great article where Dell IT talks about best practices and why they chose Oracle Linux. 

Here's an excerpt:

"Migrating 1,700 servers from SUSE Linux to Oracle Linux was an aggressive IT decision, one deemed necessary by Dell to gain better stability and support, easier administration, and lower costs. Extracting the underlying operating system layer and replacing it, while leaving the application layer intact, was possible only because of standardization across the Linux platforms. The bulk of the site-specific operating system configuration could simply be backed up and restored directly on the new operating system. Similarly, Oracle Database and other applications required only minor configuration changes to transition from SUSE Linux to Oracle Linux."
