Friday Spotlight: Oracle Linux and Database Smart Flash Cache

Happy Friday!

One of the coolest, yet perhaps not best known, features of running Oracle Database and Oracle Linux together is Database Smart Flash Cache. Wim Coekaerts put it this way on his blog earlier this week:

"Basically, if you have flash devices attached to your server, you can use this flash memory to increase the size of the buffer cache. So instead of aging blocks out of the buffer cache and having to go back to reading them from disk, they move to the much, much faster flash storage as a secondary fast buffer cache (for reads, not writes)."

So, this gives you a way to significantly increase performance on your systems running the Oracle Database and Oracle Linux. How cool is that? Wim then goes on to describe the few easy steps it takes to get it up and running.

I highly recommend checking out Wim's blog entry on this fantastic feature, and there is also an in-depth white paper you can have a read through for even more info.

Have a great week!

Friday Spotlight: The Oracle Learning Library

Happy Friday!

You might have seen Antoinette O'Sullivan's post earlier this week about a new video for Ksplice. This video is part of the Oracle Learning Library, which is a tremendous resource for Oracle product information. There is a lot of content there on Oracle Linux, and if you're using other Oracle technologies, too, there is information on Oracle VM, Oracle Database, Oracle Cloud, Engineered Systems, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle Fusion Middleware, the list goes on and on. If you have not checked it out, I highly recommend heading over there for some Friday afternoon learning.

We'll see you next week!

Friday Spotlight: New Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database

Happy Friday!

In last week's Oracle Virtualization Spotlight, Honglin Su discussed new Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database. Here's an excerpt:

The Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database provides a framework that fully automates the creation of a Single Instance, Oracle Restart (Single Instance/HA) or Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) configurations in an Oracle VM environment. In a matter of minutes the versatile and powerful Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database can be cloned into any number of VMs which could be deployed as a Single Instance, Oracle Restart (Single Instance/HA) or Oracle RAC of any number of nodes.

Of course, this is the Oracle Linux blog, so why am I referencing new Oracle VM Templates? Because these templates of course run Oracle Linux! Here are the highlights of the new templates:

NEW in 2015 Templates:

  • Yum@Deploy support(11gR2 & 12c) - Allows running yum install/update during first boot/deployment and subsequent re-builds.
  • Multi-Diskgroup support for Oracle ASM
  • Support for multiplexed Controlfile & REDO logfiles
  • Default kernel boot is Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK3) 3.8.13-55, seamless transition to HVM mode
  • Oracle Linux 7, BTRFS & Ksplice Ready!

You can read Honglin's full post over at the Oracle Virtualization Blog, or you can go directly to the Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database page.

Have a great week and we'll see you next Friday!

Friday Spotlight: Docker!

Happy Friday!

If you missed it yesterday, we did a press release describing the posting of Oracle Linux images on the Docker Hub Registry. If you're already working with Docker or interested in getting started with it, Oracle Linux gives you an extremely solid foundation to build on.

For a bit more on Docker, we did a webcast in November called Building the Modern Cloud-Enabled Data Center, where Docker and other trending topics were discussed. Have a view of the replay.

Also, did you know that you can bookmark tag searches on Oracle blogs? For example, to find posts on our blog about Docker, you'd use this:

https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/tags/docker

Click that link and bookmark it, and you'll always have the complete list of Oracle Linux Blog posts that mention Docker.

Have a great week and we'll see you next Friday!

Friday Spotlight: Oracle Linux and The Next Generation of Oracle Engineered Systems

Happy Friday! This has been exciting week for the Oracle Linux and Oracle VM teams here at Oracle, with our products prominently featured in The Next Generation of Oracle Engineered Systems event on Wednesday. If you missed the live event, take some time to watch the videos in the archive.

In addition to the Larry Ellison announcement video--which is highly recommended!--there is in-depth Oracle Linux content in two of the other videos. First, the panel discussion video (video #3 in the list on the archive page) features several Oracle executives, including Oracle Senior Vice President, Linux and Virtualization, Wim Coekaerts. And last, in the Go Deep section Wim goes into detail on Oracle Linux and how it can benefit your data center.

We'll covered Engineered Systems many times on the blog, but we'll get into some detail on these new systems and Oracle Linux in future entries. In the meantime, clicking any of the pictures in this post will take you to the replay, it's exciting stuff!

We'll see you next week!

Friday Spotlight: Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 4

Happy Friday!

The big news this week was the release of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 4. If you missed our blog about it on Monday, there are a number of interesting improvements in this release. And a really nice aspect of the Oracle Linux architecture is that you can use the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel on either Oracle Linux 6 or Oracle Linux 7. This gives you a tremendous amount of flexibility by not forcing you to upgrade the entire OS to get these improvements.

Read the blog for more info on this release, and we'll see you next week!

Friday Spotlight: Get The Story Straight From The Source

Happy Friday!

One of the great things about webcasts is that you get to hear directly from Oracle experts and even ask questions about your own environment. They are a great way to get in-depth information straight from the source, especially if you weren’t able to come out to Oracle OpenWorld this year.

Coming up next Tuesday, we have an excellent webcast hosted by Oracle Linux Product Management Director Avi Miller, “Spacewalk and Ksplice: Keep Oracle Linux Systems Up to Date and Secure.” In the webcast, Avi will explain the details on using Spacewalk and Ksplice with Oracle Linux. And you’ll be able to ask Avi questions through the chat interface. And since Avi is based in Australia, we’ve scheduled this webcast at 3PM PST, allowing our friends in that part of the world to be able to tune in at a reasonable hour.

And thank you to those of you that joined our webcast this past Tuesday on Building the Modern Cloud-Enabled Data Center! If you missed that one, it’s a great introduction to Linux Containers, Docker, OpenStack, and more. The replay is just over 20 minutes, so you can head on over and check it out for a very concise overview of these technologies:

Friday Spotlight: Docker, Spacewalk, LISA14, Korea Linux Forum, and More!

Happy Friday!

It’s been a fun and exciting week here, it’s difficult to pick a single item for the Spotlight. So here is a round up of the news:

- We released the official Docker images for Oracle Linux. No longer a tech preview, the Docker Engine and official Oracle Linux images are fully supported as part of Oracle Linux Basic and Premier support subscriptions.

- If you missed it last week, the Spacewalk client for Oracle Linux 7 was released. You can read more here.

- We had a great time at LISA14, with many of you getting to talk to our experts at the booth and attending Ken Crandall’s session on the modern, cloud-enabled data center. Here is a picture of a live Ksplice demo going on at the booth (yes, rebooting is obsolete!):

If you weren’t at the show and want to see Ken’s session (and I highly recommend it), you can catch a webcast version this coming Tuesday:

Building the Modern Cloud-Enabled Data Center with Oracle Linux 7
Date: Tuesday, November 18, 2014
Time: 9:00 am PST

Come and hear Ken's insightful views on how Oracle can help you build a modern infrastructure.

- We were also at the Linux Foundation’s Korea Linux Forum. Another great opportunity to answer your questions about Oracle Linux, our Oracle staff at the show told me there was a great response at the booth and our speaking session on Btrfs.

- The Oracle Linux November newsletter is out! It’s a great way to catch up on everything that happened this year at Oracle OpenWorld 2014, read about product releases over the last 8 weeks or so, and much more. You can read it online here, or subscribe so it arrives automatically in your inbox.

Whew, it was a busy week! We hope you have a great weekend and we’ll see you next week with more.

Friday Spotlight: Oracle OpenWorld Slide Decks

Happy Friday!

Every year after Oracle OpenWorld, many of the slide decks become available for you to download. If you were at these sessions, it's great to have these PDFs for reference, and if you weren't able to go, or had sessions overlapping, you can read the slides and get a sense of the key points.

You can find the slides from the Oracle OpenWorld 2014 Content Catalog. You can search for sessions that you'd like to download. Some good keywords are "Oracle Linux", "Oracle VM", "OpenStack", etc.

We'll see you next week!

Friday Spotlight: Oracle OpenWorld 2014 Comes to a Close!

Oracle OpenWorld 2014 has wrapped up and we want to sincerely thank everyone who came to our sessions and hands on labs, stopped by the booths, and interacted with the Oracle Linux team at the show. It's always amazing to get to spend time directly with the users of our products at Oracle OpenWorld, and we look forward to another great experience in 2015!

I wanted to point out that Honglin Su has a great blog about over in the Virtualization Friday Spotlight on Intel's Next Generation Firewall for Oracle VM. And of course, Oracle VM is built on Oracle Linux!

I'll leave you with a few pictures from the show, and then in our upcoming blogs we'll go into more detail about new and interesting things that happened here. Safe travels back home, everyone!

Friday Spotlight: Focus On Oracle Linux at Oracle OpenWorld 2014

Happy Friday!

One of my favorite moments of the Oracle OpenWorld process is when the Schedule Builder tool opens up and attendees can start planning their schedules. That happened this week, and you can access it at the main Oracle OpenWorld page by clicking the "Sessions" menu and then "Schedule Builder".

In addition to Schedule Builder, another really great tool the Oracle OpenWorld team provides is called the Focus On document. These are dynamic HTML pages that group together similar topics to make it easy to identify things that would be interesting to you at the show.

The Focus on Oracle Linux document has been live for a few weeks, but up until this week it didn't have scheduling info, so it's much more interesting to take a look at now!

As I mentioned, the Focus On Document is dynamically generated when you click on it, so it gives you an up to the second view of the Oracle Linux content at the show. In fact, there should even be a couple of more additions to this schedule as a few more of the scheduling items get finalized, so the Focus On is a great way to keep track of those new items, too. And if you're logged in to your Oracle account, you can even click the little + icon on each session to register right then and there.

If you're interested attending Oracle OpenWorld and you are interested in Oracle Linux, please bookmark it. It's very handy to have, especially on your mobile device, at the show!

And look to this space for a lot more Oracle OpenWorld content in the coming weeks as we roll on toward toward the show starting on October 28 in San Francisco!
