I wanted to bring some attention to a great series of events that kicked off this week in the US in Chicago, Oracle Cloud Day: Transforming Your Tomorrow.
This is a worldwide set of events that will help you understand how cloud is being used today, and how Oracle can help you leverage cloud technology to meet your business goals. These in person events talk about the entire Oracle portfolio, and many locations feature a dedicated session on Oracle Linux, Oracle VM, and Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux. If you're in the areas where these events are being held, I highly recommend them!
Oracle is one of the biggest contributors to Linux but it’s also at the forefront of exploring what is possible with cloud computing and containers, including integrations with Docker and contributions to the Open Container Initiative.
This year Oracle is sponsoring LinuxCon North America and Wim Coekaerts, Sr.VP Oracle Linux and Virtualization Engineering will be keynote speaker. He will be talking at the event specifically about how the cloud revolution is changing the role of the operating system, a very relevant topic for attendees. Amanda McPherson of Linux Foundation, spoke to Wim at Oracle’s campus in Redwood Shores a few weeks ago, and in this short video preview, Wim tells if the operating system still matters in a world of virtualization and containers and how that impacts application development.
"This document explains how to increase Oracle database performance and improve user response time by deploying Oracle’s Flash Accelerator hardware with Oracle’s Database Smart Flash Cache feature. Oracle’s Database Smart Flash Cache feature is supported only on Oracle Linux and Oracle Solaris operating systems beginning with Oracle 11gR2.
The benefits outlined here apply to all Oracle Flash products on Oracle Linux or Oracle Solaris. For this particular study Oracle’s PCIe based in-server Sun Flash Accelerator F40 PCIe Card and Oracle Linux with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel were used. The findings apply to both the Sun Flash Accelerator F40 and F80 PCIe Cards."
I also wanted to give a reminder for our webcast next week on Docker. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn not only how to get your feet wet with Docker and Oracle Linux, but you'll also learn the sorts of use cases where Docker really shines from one of our top experts, Avi Miller.
Getting Started with Oracle Linux and Docker webcast May 7, 2015 2PM-3PM Pacific Time
Docker has been an extremely interesting technology for Linux users, but how do you get started with it? We have a very cool webcast coming up that you won't want to miss titled "Getting Started with Oracle Linux and Docker."
Featuring Oracle Director of Product Management Avi Miller, the webcast will describe how Docker can be used with Oracle Linux to simplify your application deployment. Avi has a wealth of experience with Linux, Docker, and many other technologies and will take you through the nuts and bolts of using Docker with Oracle Linux.

Are you struggling with finding the right infrastructure that supports the performance demands of ALL your Oracle workloads, while balancing budgetary constraints and limitations? Does your applications and database instances require a lot of horsepower but you can’t cost-justify deploying them on expensive, high-end infrastructure?
Dell offers a solution for this “middle-band” of applications, one that balances performance with total cost of ownership. The Dell Integrated System for Oracle Database (DISOD), pre-installed with Oracle Linux with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, is delivered ready to be installed with Oracle Database 12c, 11gR2, or 10g, providing the flexibility to fit into any existing infrastructure. Oracle Linux brings the latest Linux innovations to market, delivering performance, scalability, and reliability for enterprise applications, enterprise-class, low-cost support.
Attend our upcoming webinar March 4, 2015, at 9:00 am PST (11am CST) to find out :
Why DISOD delivers easy to procure, yet flexible to expand architecture perfectly suited to meet your needs
How your database can perform better without investing in high-end systems
Why Oracle Linux with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is the best choice for Oracle Database and Dell systems
In addition to the Larry Ellison announcement video--which is highly recommended!--there is in-depth Oracle Linux content in two of the other videos. First, the panel discussion video (video #3 in the list on the archive page) features several Oracle executives, including Oracle Senior Vice President, Linux and Virtualization, Wim Coekaerts. And last, in the Go Deep section Wim goes into detail on Oracle Linux and how it can benefit your data center.
We'll covered Engineered Systems many times on the blog, but we'll get into some detail on these new systems and Oracle Linux in future entries. In the meantime, clicking any of the pictures in this post will take you to the replay, it's exciting stuff!
Since it's Thanksgiving week in the USA we're doing our Friday spotlight early this week.

One of the greatest challenges surrounding corporations is maintaining business continuity when backing up mission-critical data. Most organizations use at least two or three separate backup solutions at once, which drastically complicate disaster recovery and lengthen backup windows.
This session will demonstrate how one solution can move data quickly and efficiently between Linux environments. Multi-Streaming Technology also allows for simultaneous backup streams, decreasing backup windows by 50-98%. SEP is the ideal backup and disaster recovery solution for your bare metal or virtual environment on Oracle VM and Oracle Linux as well as any mixed O/S.
In this session you will learn:
Best practices for business continuity when using physical, virtual and cloud platforms.
Why Oracle Linux provides the best platform for backup and disaster recovery
One simple solution to back up heterogeneous environments to any destination of your choosing.
How to decrease backup windows 50-98% in both physical and virtual environments using Multi-Streaming Technology.
