Friday Spotlight: Oracle Linux and Database Smart Flash Cache

Happy Friday!

One of the coolest, yet perhaps not best known, features of running Oracle Database and Oracle Linux together is Database Smart Flash Cache. Wim Coekaerts put it this way on his blog earlier this week:

"Basically, if you have flash devices attached to your server, you can use this flash memory to increase the size of the buffer cache. So instead of aging blocks out of the buffer cache and having to go back to reading them from disk, they move to the much, much faster flash storage as a secondary fast buffer cache (for reads, not writes)."

So, this gives you a way to significantly increase performance on your systems running the Oracle Database and Oracle Linux. How cool is that? Wim then goes on to describe the few easy steps it takes to get it up and running.

I highly recommend checking out Wim's blog entry on this fantastic feature, and there is also an in-depth white paper you can have a read through for even more info.

Have a great week!

PARTNER NEWS: Dell offers Oracle Products in its Integrated Solutions

Data center managers are faced with a perpetual dilemma: finding the right infrastructure that supports the performance demands of ALL their Oracle applications, while balancing budgetary constraints and limitations.

They find that many applications and database instances require a lot of horsepower, but can’t cost-justify deploying on expensive, high-end infrastructure. Dell offers a solution for this “middle-band” of applications, one that balances performance with total cost of ownership. The Dell Integrated System for Oracle Databases (DISOD) is an easy to procure, yet flexible to expand architecture perfectly suited to meet these needs.

Based on Dell’s Acceleration Appliance for Databases (DAAD), the DISOD couples two 4 cpu, 40 core PowerEdge R920 servers with the ultra-fast performance of DAAD, a 12TB flash storage appliance that can deliver over a million IOPs and 5.7 gigabytes per second sustained throughput in a data warehouse or transaction processing environment.

Pre-installed with Oracle Linux with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, DISOD is delivered ready to be installed with Oracle Database 12c, 11gR2, or 10g, providing the flexibility to fit into any existing infrastructure. And, the Dell hardware configuration in this article is fully supported on Oracle Linux with the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel.

Friday Spotlight: Oracle Linux and MySQL TPC-C Optimizations Whitepaper

Happy Friday Oracle Linux fans, this week our spotlight is a new whitepaper that is co- authored by Rick Stehno of Seagate and Avi Miller of Oracle. This paper gives tips to optimize your Oracle Linux, MySQL and the PCIe card which increases the performance of your environment with just few steps:

Oracle Linux and MySQL TPC-C Optimizations When Implementing the Sun Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe Card

Oracle Linux with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) was chosen for this study because of its upstream support for the latest hardware relevant to modern data center operations. In addition, MySQL database workloads benefit from the platform’s deep integration with the solution stack, optimizations resulting from industry collaborations and enhancements in the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel.

Oracle Linux with the Unbreakable Enteprise Kernel includes extensive performance and scalability improvements to the process scheduler, memory management, file systems, and the networking stack. It was tuned to perform better and faster on leading-edge x86 configurations that feature many CPU cores and large amounts of main memory, and optimized libraries and system calls help to improve performance for MySQL queries. Because of these optimizations and pervasive testing that occurs within Oracle, Oracle Linux is able to address large transaction capacities and scale well as the number of database users or the number of databases increases. This document will present tuning and processes that can be applied to increase TPC-C performance when using the Sun Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe Card.

By following the simple tuning tips outlined in this paper, a successful implementation of the Sun Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe Card with optimal performance can occur in most environments.

Friday Spotlight - October 25, 2013

Happy Friday, everyone!

Our spotlight this week is on a really cool technical tip on the Oracle Technology Network from Yuli Vasiliev called "How to Launch Linux Utilities from Oracle Database". From Yuli's introduction:

"By wrapping a Linux utility in a script and using an external database table's preprocessor directive, you can launch the utility from within Oracle Database and have the utility's output be inserted into the external table. This allows you to do things such as query operating system data and then join it with data in Oracle Database."

Head on over to OTN to read the full article.

Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-Install RPM for Oracle Linux 6 has been released

Now that the certification of the Oracle Database 11g R2 with Oracle Linux 6 and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel has been announced, we are glad to announce the availability of oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall, the Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-install RPM package (formerly known as oracle-validated). Designed specifically for Oracle Linux 6, this RPM aids in the installation of the Oracle Database.

In order to install the Oracle Database 11g R2 on Oracle Linux 6, your system needs to meet a few prerequisites, as outlined in the Linux Installation Guides. Using the Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-install RPM, you can complete most of the pre-installation configuration tasks. which is now available from the Unbreakable Linux Network, or via the Oracle public yum repository.

The pre-install package is available for x86_64 only. Specifically, the package:

  • Causes the download and installation of various software packages and specific versions needed for database installation, with package dependencies resolved via yum
  • Creates the user oracle and the groups oinstall and dba, which are the defaults used during database installation
  • Modifies kernel parameters in /etc/sysctl.conf to change settings for shared memory, semaphores, the maximum number of file descriptors, and so on
  • Sets hard and soft shell resource limits in /etc/security/limits.conf, such as the number of open files, the number of processes, and stack size to the minimum required based on the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Server installation requirements
  • Sets numa=off in the kernel boot parameters for x86_64 machines
Please see the release announcement for further details and instructions. Also take a look at Ginny Henningsen's "How I Simplified Oracle Database Installation on Oracle Linux" article on the Oracle Technology Network for a general description on how to perform the installation of the Oracle Database on Oracle Linux. While the article refers to Oracle Linux 5 and the former "oracle-validated" package, the steps for Oracle Linux 6 are still very similar (we're looking into updating that article for Oracle Linux 6).
