Friday Spotlight: Oracle and Microsoft Offer Choice and Flexibility

Happy  Pi Day !

Today we would like to shine the spotlight to one of our key Partnerships.

Since last June, Oracle and Microsoft are working together to help customers embrace cloud computing by providing greater choice and flexibility in how to deploy Oracle software. The partnership combines the world class mission-critical business software of Oracle with the leading private and public cloud platforms of Microsoft. Here are some of the key highlights of this partnership:

  • Microsoft Hyper-V now supports the latest Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 1 for Oracle Linux
  • Oracle provides license mobility for customers who want to run Oracle software on Windows Azure.
  • Windows Azure images with popular configurations of Oracle software including Java, Oracle Database, Oracle WebLogic Server, and Oracle Linux are available in the Windows Azure image gallery.

Microsoft now offers Oracle software generally available on Windows Azure as of March 12 and has shared publicly for the first time a price list.

Friday Spotlight - October 25, 2013

Happy Friday, everyone!

Our spotlight this week is on a really cool technical tip on the Oracle Technology Network from Yuli Vasiliev called "How to Launch Linux Utilities from Oracle Database". From Yuli's introduction:

"By wrapping a Linux utility in a script and using an external database table's preprocessor directive, you can launch the utility from within Oracle Database and have the utility's output be inserted into the external table. This allows you to do things such as query operating system data and then join it with data in Oracle Database."

Head on over to OTN to read the full article.

Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-Install RPM for Oracle Linux 6 has been released

Now that the certification of the Oracle Database 11g R2 with Oracle Linux 6 and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel has been announced, we are glad to announce the availability of oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall, the Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-install RPM package (formerly known as oracle-validated). Designed specifically for Oracle Linux 6, this RPM aids in the installation of the Oracle Database.

In order to install the Oracle Database 11g R2 on Oracle Linux 6, your system needs to meet a few prerequisites, as outlined in the Linux Installation Guides. Using the Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-install RPM, you can complete most of the pre-installation configuration tasks. which is now available from the Unbreakable Linux Network, or via the Oracle public yum repository.

The pre-install package is available for x86_64 only. Specifically, the package:

  • Causes the download and installation of various software packages and specific versions needed for database installation, with package dependencies resolved via yum
  • Creates the user oracle and the groups oinstall and dba, which are the defaults used during database installation
  • Modifies kernel parameters in /etc/sysctl.conf to change settings for shared memory, semaphores, the maximum number of file descriptors, and so on
  • Sets hard and soft shell resource limits in /etc/security/limits.conf, such as the number of open files, the number of processes, and stack size to the minimum required based on the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Server installation requirements
  • Sets numa=off in the kernel boot parameters for x86_64 machines
Please see the release announcement for further details and instructions. Also take a look at Ginny Henningsen's "How I Simplified Oracle Database Installation on Oracle Linux" article on the Oracle Technology Network for a general description on how to perform the installation of the Oracle Database on Oracle Linux. While the article refers to Oracle Linux 5 and the former "oracle-validated" package, the steps for Oracle Linux 6 are still very similar (we're looking into updating that article for Oracle Linux 6).

Game Changer Appliance for SMBs Powered by Oracle Linux

In the November 28th CRN article  Review: Thumbs-Up On Oracle Database Appliance  , Edward F. Moltzen mentions that "The Test Center likes this appliance (Oracle Database Appliance) , for the performance and for the strong security offered by the underlying Oracle Linux in the box. It’s more than a solid offering for the SMB space; it’s potentially a game-changer as data and security needs race to keep up with the oncoming generations of technology."

The Oracle Database Appliance is a new way to take advantage of the world's most popular database—Oracle Database 11g—in a single, easy-to-deploy and manage system. It's a complete package of software, server, storage, and network that's engineered for simplicity; saving time and money by simplifying deployment, maintenance, and support of database workloads. All hardware and software components are supported by a single vendor—Oracle—and offer customers unique pay-as-you-grow software licensing to quickly scale from 2 processor cores to 24 processor cores without incurring the costs and downtime usually associated with hardware upgrades. It is:

  • Simple—Complete plug-and-go hardware and software
  • Reliable—Advanced management features and single-vendor support
  • Affordable—Pay-as-you-grow platform for small database consolidation

The Oracle Database Appliance is a 4U rack-mountable system pre-installed with Oracle Linux and Oracle appliance manager software. Redundancy is built into all components and the Oracle appliance manager software reduces the risk and complexity of deploying highly available databases. It's perfect for consolidating OLTP and data warehousing databases up to 4 terabytes in size, making it ideal for midsize companies or departmental systems.

Oracle Database Smart Flash Cache: Only on Oracle Linux and Oracle Solaris

Oracle Database Smart Flash Cache is a feature that was first introduced with Oracle Database 11g Release 2. Only available on Oracle Linux and Oracle Solaris, this feature increases the size of the database buffer cache without having to add RAM to the system. In effect, it acts as a second level cache on flash memory and will especially benefit read-intensive database applications.

The Oracle Database Smart Flash Cache white paper concludes:

Available at no additional cost, Database Smart Flash Cache on Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux has the potential to offer considerable benefit to users of Oracle Database 11g Release 2 with disk-bound read-mostly or read-only workloads, through the simple addition of flash storage such as the Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array or the Sun Flash Accelerator F20 PCIe Card.
